  1. Chain stores, are absolutely the problem:

    - pay poverty wages/ wages subsidised by the tax payer 'in work benefits'

    - push up rents, preventing local people from owning their own business/ having job security

    - syphon off profits (or at least more likely to, not always) to tax havens

    - more likely to be owned by awful, already wealthy shareholders (e.g. Sainsburys is 15% owned by the Qatari government)

Yes they provide cheaper options, but they help create the poverty which requires such cheaper options. If they didn't exist, perhaps their employees could own their own shops/ businesses.

  2. Keen to get others' views: the redesign appears to be prioritising revenue generation via camera controls. Eg. with the Melbourne North road blockers moved south, I assume most unfamiliar drivers looking to turn left from EDG would use Derwent instead.

I'm hugely against cars, however fooling people into penalty charges is unethical.

  3. I have had what I interpret as confirmation from Southern that trains may never be increased. I urge you all to email Helen Hayes and Sidiq Khan about this (please suggest anyone else that can actually do something about this?).

Context is as follows- I sent a complaint about the current service to Southern Rail in which I asked, 'please tell me when we will have 6 trains per hour from ED to London Bridge', to which they replied (copy/paste):

'We?re currently unable to tell you precisely when, and which, services may increase'

  4. Hi, I've been following this thread with some interest and just wanted to throw a point into the mix.

I think we shouldn't forget that the reason these changes keep getting made is because someone is employed to propose and make road changes. Whoever this person at the council is will continue to make such changes so long as their job continues to exist. There will be many more pointless road adaptations in the future because it is someone's job to propose and implement them.

I think the best example is how recently the junction between Chesterfield Road and Melbourne Grove saw the pavements widened. Ultimately it was pointless, if perhaps a slight improvement, but without it happening this mythical person at Southwark Council would have had nothing to do.
