  1. In my view, the painted signs - stating the name of the relevant road - on the facades/sides of houses in ED have great character and lend great charm to the area as a whole. Although there are plenty of these signs the vast majority are worn/illegible. Perhaps this has been discussed before but, personally, I think it would be great for owners/the council to re-paint these where appropriate/permitted. It would preserve the distinctive nature of ED (I do not know of any other areas in London which have retained these signs) and it would permit the removal of some visual pollution (modern signs/signposts). For those who wish to see what they could like I note that the 'Chesterfield Grove' and 'Melbourne Grove' signs have been re-painted on two of the houses at that junction and they look great.
  2. Am I the only person who finds the obsession with class on the EDf tedious and lazy (or, frankly, simply rude in the case of Louisa's post)?
  3. Thanks to those who attended the meeting in Brockley. Interesting. This morning the flight noise has been especially bad since 4:30am - it has been like a near constant wall of sound emanating from the grey cloud. I appreciate that not everyone seems to experience this - could it be to do with location in ED? For example, those near the Plough end of ED are probably better off than those living in roads like silvester road/pellat road (the planes literally go straight overhead (when it is not cloudy you can see the undercarriages)). Anyway, for those who are affected, perhaps it is more constructive to send an e-mail to [email protected]. Apparently, they track the numbers of complaints received through this e-mail address and log the complainant's location on a map.
  4. I wholeheartedly agree with the 'minority' who believe that the aircraft noise is awful and has gotten much much worse recently (I don't really care if there is evidence this is not the case. In my view the planes are more frequent and much lower which has made the noise pollution an issue which seriously affects a number of East Dulwich's residents' quality of life in East Dulwich). I also noticed the fact that there were no planes going overhead during Saturday - I woke to the sound of birds rather than the whining of jet engines every couple of minutes. It was quite a revelation. Only a few more decades until hopefully they shut down Heathrow and build an airport in the estuary. In the meantime, surely there are some things government, MPs, councillors, Heathrow, whoever can do to try and alleviate the concerns of those people living directly under/near to the approach paths.
  5. Thanks all - some good suggestions. I wish I could block it out like some fellow residents but I struggle. Anyways, from this research it looks like damage is done in any event - oh well. If you have a snoring partner it appears you are hit by a double whammy. www.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7238862.stm (if the link does not work - google bbc news 'sleepers at risk from jet noise')
  6. Daniel, I totally agree with you. The aircraft noise is terrible and seems to be getting worse in my opinion - no idea why though. I wake up at half four each morning when Heathrow re-opens. Shutters do not make any difference.
