I had Aardvark Sweeps around today. We used them last year and got them back again to open up a boarded up fireplace and to sweep the chimney in preparation for the intended installation of a woodburning stove. I have to say, Gary was impeccable in doing this quickly and cleanly. Amazing since there was 3 sacks of soot taken away! Also, good advice on the sort of stove to go for and where to find them - a really good local service. Straightforward to deal with, contact info on their website. Aardvarksweeps.co.uk

Fed up of forking out for school stuff?
Primula replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think that schools should be about far more than providing academic opportunities. They should also be about broadening pupils horizons through giving their students access to experiences beyond that they would normally get. This may be trips locally, nationally and internationally or maybe through access to extra curricular lessons in areas not covered by the main curriculum. I also think that these opportunities should be inclusive and not just for this who can afford them. -
Too many unsolicited people ringing bell :(
Primula replied to hind's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I am polite to them... I can't think that many people would do this job from choice bearing in mind the negative responses and rudeness you are likely to encounter. my view is its just as easy to say a polite and firm 'no thanks' rather than make someone miserable who's already doing a miserable job. It is a nuisance, I agree. -
Advice on how to proceed - possible drains collapse under house
Primula replied to Ellie78's topic in Request a Tradesperson
Have you had the water tested to see if it is sewage? i.e. drain water. It could be the rising water table as a result of all the rain we have been having. I used to have a flat in Underhill Road with a basement that got flooded when there had been heavy rain. Eventually, I got it 'tanked' and this stopped it coming through. -
Being new to the area and not really knowing who to ask for recommendations, EDF was my first stop when looking for a chimney sweep. After scanning the recs on here, it was toss up between Alan at 123 and Aardvark. I went for Aardvark mainly because of the recommendations but also because they seem to be the only locally based Chimney Sweeping business. I have to say that they were actually as good as people say! I won't rehash all the plaudits, but needless to say thoroughly decent guys who know what they are doing and do it extremely well at a cost of ?55 - anyway five stars from me!

This seems to be a fairly consistent problem. It has happened to me twice in the last few years and I know it has happened to others. Unfortunately Vespa fuel lines make it easy for the little shits to make a quick get away with your fuel. The police aren't likely to pursue this type of crime. It will happen again so you'll need to work out your own deterrent!

Thanks to you all for your responses. I have got in touch with a number of sites mentioned. Just hope my knees last out.....

I've just moved to ED and am wondering about the possibility of getting an allotment. What's the inside track on obtaining one? Or is it a case of waiting lists being so long it is likely i'd be too decrepit to be in a fit state work one?
