Beautiful flowers being picked and walked on.
Seabag replied to loni's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As nice as they are, they are a misnomer in reality, a floral graffiti to some. They're a usually a planted hybrid stock, in a pretty but unnatural planting scheme. I'd personally rather they didn't plant Daf's under trees, it's out of context. I prefer them in beds, much like tulips. I wonder why they dont plant Tulips in the same way. That said, it's out of order to trash or pick stuff which is there for eveyone to enjoy. -
Decathlon for the kids, unmatched. Adult stuff is good too, but if you're after something particular, then maybe elsewhere. I use Evans on Canary Wharf, service level there is good. Balfe's I like sometimes And Cadence (?) the Giant dealer in Crystal Palace on a Sunday is ok. I used to use Edwards years ago, in Camberwell. It had a no messing will do vibe. Sea Bass cycles at the Bussey is ok too, pricey but helpful.

The use of 'pretentious' on here so overused that its power has faded. Now it means 'I'm just being stupid because it suits me to be' I think the use on here has been spiked at people 'liking stuff' because it looks good, or makes them feel superior to those who don't like it, or know much about it. It's previously been used to define a certain middle class affectation of sophistication, just to impress those who may already be equally as impressed with themselves. -
Micheal Heseltine knows how he sees thing regarding stuff not to be messed with. "Those of us in politics, those who care, we are not performing fleas where the ringmaster says 'jump' and we all turn hands up over ourselves. We are not like that. I'm sure he then followed that with "and that Boris Johnson and that Mary Berry can go fuck themselves with thier meddling in sauces they quite clearly know nothing about"

Weirdly, or not so weirdly, as I'm an asthmatic too, my breathing has been in tip top fettle of late. But then I'm over the hill, on the downlands of Sydenham.

Ok, I know Dishoom has a near cult following and I've had lunch there once or twice, but it's not THAT great, or am I missing someting. I know it also does some things that only once went on behind closed doors, like Bacon Naan butties (that is them right?) But, did I miss something, other than the queue? -

Not too much to ask for really is it? Lucky we didn't do a dinner date there then Ha ha! -

OK, I kinda get you BUT the costs are bound to change, no? Can you illustrate one of the 'those who murder the experience' offenders in the street to restaurant transition It's done well for some, giving them a chance to grow. But (Beard to Tail being one of the worst offenders) some have been awful. Oh and, didn't Xoco try some kinda faux street food fusion model? -

The #WeWantPlates thing isn't about the lack of plates in street food, but the silliness that third rate Gastro pub giants have deemed nessasarry, to add 'novelty' into eating. By infantilising the eating experience, they've been able to hide a whole lot of crap ingredients and food. Whereas the street food revolution has been based on a stripping away of the ideals of 'fine dining' and basing the experience on quality ingredients, where they're from and how it's cooked. No frills, hub caps or cricket bats nessasarry. However, as with all good things, bandwagons are jumped on. Even pizza Express has a street food outlet now. -

TN and DT are pretty mediocre in my view. It's all just about ok, but the bar is set very low on the lane. Hence the need for alcohol with the food. A good and fresh approach would be fun. I don't know why Indian food offers vere into the starchy table cloth and faux posh when they 'go upmarket'. That kind of dining is dead as a dodo elsewhere, I've even been to one place that did sauce smears on the plate with the meat sliced in a 'presentation' style. I can't remember if it had a square plate or not, but it was silly. Hopefully we wont see any of that or the #WeWantPlates style of food malarkey on the lane, please god don't let that happen. I'm not sure I could cope with a cricket bat with a naan draped over it. -
No UG, done well it's a delight. But I must admit, it weights heavy on my belly when I do eat it. The batter needs to be lighter than light to succeed, else it's like a greasy sausage and onion on a bed of neoprene. But boiled bacon and peas pudding is a good dish, as are eels themselves. But jellied is not my thing, I prefer cured and smoked like salmon. Or grilled, with a thick slice of smoked back and some mash potatoes. However, any dish in the wrong hands can be a disaster. Ahhh...food glorious food!

Be honest, phrasing development with words such as 'sanitising' and 'cleansing' are emotive and used to suit your agenda. But time to get real! nothing stays the same here in the vibrant/interesting city we live in. What you want sounds like a petting zoo of sorts, with all the little areas there in their place, frozen in time to suit a nice little diversity vision. No thanks to that.

Half Decent curry near waterloo / royal festival hall ?

There's a vegetarian place up near the Opera that I like https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d1699679-Reviews-Sagar_Vegetarian_Covent_Garden_Restaurant-London_England.html -
Money, last time I looked didn't have a skin tone. ALL of it is about opportunities, like when this 'accidental' wave of students took up residence. It was cheap, they moved in = transaction related to opportunity and income. Stop with the 'cleansing' language please, its sounding like some kind of conspiracy theory cark. It doesn't do anyone any good and it's patronising. Sadly, most of the money that goes in is 'by investment' from people who see very little of the place they invest in, they do it as a punt, to see the best return. Not to clean up an area and drive people (whatever colour) out.

Jah Lush Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Similar things are happening with the businesses > in the railway arches in Brixton and Herne Hill. > Those businesses are being pushed out due to very > high rent increases. Exactly. I have a yard in an arch, in the 'once' arse end of nowhere Deptford. Now its changing, I suppose we were part of the change, but it was early days and we took a punt. My arch looks and operates much as others do/did. But changes are happening, we're not sure how the future will pan out as Deptford revives. However, when the rents change, the values go up, what do we do? We stay, pay and realise we had it good for a long while. It's much why shops set up in cheap places, its how we as businesses make the best of what's there. It's part of the transaction arena we thrive in. Streets are trails of history, ask people like Lou and Foxy and others. They'll tell you of many things about change.

Thank you rahrahrah My point is that people want it to be about 'the community' that might have to move, whereas it's as much about money and opportunities as anything. You can't rebuild, whilst people are inside, so you'd have to vacate. London is being rebuilt, that includes Peckham. Something's give, some things go, ever it will be. I like Peckham, it's a nice place to see the world. But it going to change, can't stop that.

The Cheese(d off)Block isn't big enough to expand to a deli, is it? But whatever he does, he's taking his time to make his move. Maybe he'll get rind to it sometime soon.

I'm slightly cautious that the predominantly white middle classes are rubbing there chins about this, because it suits their arms length 'P.C' agenda. But be honest, most people really don't give a toss. It's about money and not some darker motive. In some way those salons make Peckham feel more exotic/edgy, I wonder if it's partly that that drives the 'concern' over the move. I'm also cautious about emotive words like 'cleansing', because in reality it'll not lessen the mix of the community. There's another hair shop in E.D that's moving because of development, but not a dickie bird of interest from people. The owners is Irish, his rent will be increased, but who cares, it's just business, no?
-
If you take the 'Peckham/black' out of the title, then I'm not sure there'd even be a thread on the subject. 'Hair salons moved for re-development' doesn't have the same ring to it Business is business, location or colour isn't a transactional consideration. If a business makes money, and subsequently shifts location within its customer reach, then it has a chance of surviving. There's a business rate review, which accounts for about half of the rent value coming very soon. And this is happening at the top of a London wide peak in values of commercial property, of which the review is based on. Elsewhere in the values are down, rates are less. London, inc Peckham and all its traders, will be feel the increase.

Did he have saw dust on the floor, or was that the 'pub' up the street?
