  1. I've always called it the South London Stress. Louisiana
  2. I've never seen anyone famous as I never SEE anyone, because i'm short sighted and got used to not being able to see faces as a small child. I almost have to walk into people.Sometimes I walk right past people I know well, and it's so embarassing.I do wear glasses but the problem remains.I just don't seem to be tuned into faces. Louisiana
  3. There's one solution to the 'men can only wear x but women can wear what they like' thing: imitate one of our illustrious Turner Prize winners and wear a dress! Louisiana
  4. There was something about this on Radio 4 today (You and Yours?), so seems to be a lot of it about. They had a spokesperson from Texaco on to provide reassuring soft soap. Louisiana
  5. We've just got back from Cuba. No Dulites in evidence, but plenty of canadians and Italians. Next month we're off cycling around the Scottish highlands, specifically Islay, and I must say that Tobermoray on Mull is a totally Dulite kind of place where you bump into everybody except locals. Of course, the place par excellance to spot Dulites is Glastonbury, for which tickets go on sale Sunday for those that remembered to register. Louisiana

  7. I'd normally have taken photos of them (usually puts the fear of god in them and sends them scurrying off), but sand got into the camera on holiday last month and it's a write off. Waiting for the insurance money to replace. I tried this trick on 'gypsies' working the Ramblas in Barcelona (pairs of eastern European women waving cardboard around to divert attention from thieving) and it worked a treat: they hid behind trees, then leapt into a passing taxi! With photos, you could post them around the neighbourhood. Louisiana
  8. I've been ripping to Apple Lossless for a couple of years (on PC - yes, it works there to), but am seriously wondering whether to start again with a non-proprietary format. Don't want my entire music collection to be hostage to one company. The only thing that's been stopping me is that FLAC won't work with iTunes, so may have to throw iTunes out and try to find other software to run the Pods. (I also use iTunes to feed a wireless squeezebox to the hi-fi, but that's just an unnecessary additional step.) And just haven't got around to that. Lossless does sound a lot better than MP3, although encoding MP3s at 320 kbps does narrow down the difference *a lot*. There are some good podcasts out there - for example, for those into dance/electronica, the Resident Advisor one-hour DJ podcasts. Any Last.fm users here? Louisiana
  9. Was wondering whether to get the Deakin. Thanks. I'm listening to: Arcade Fire (Funeral and Neon Bible) LCD Soundsystem (old and new) Sufjan Stevens - everything apart from the crazy Christmas stuff The Postal Service - anything Boards of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country (I wish it were 10 times longer) Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye Joanna Newsom - Ys and The Milk-Eyed Mender U.N.K.L.E. - Edit Music For A Film (mix) Stina Nordenstam - People Are Strange Tracey Thorn - Out Of The Woods Trentemoller - The Last Resort Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself Jimmy Van M - Balance 010 (mix) M.A.N.D.Y. - At The Controls (mix) Booka Shade - Movements and anything by Ame and the German electro crowd including Tiefschwarz James Lavelle - Noir - a new DJ mix he gave me last autumn when he was supporting his younger brother at Brixton Jamm New Young Pony Club, The Presets (saw them both last spring at Canvas) and all that - one of my top tunes of 2006 was Preset's Girl & The Sea (but not Klaxons!) Various remixers, including Cut Copy, Trentemoller and finally, Burial - Burial. If you've not hear of 'dubstep', or not heard any, but like dub, techo or even ambient, Burial could be for you. It's kinda dubstep, without really being dubstep. Much wider appeal. Urban and industrial, but ethereal and emotional. Made by a south (south-east?) London producer who's a bit of a mystery, and really seems to be about south London. Whatever that is. Can't stand: Kaiser Chiefs Klaxons Lilly Allen (other than as a comic act) Haven't made up my mind about: Matthew Herbert - Scale (good in parts). (Trivia - I believe Matthew, and Dani Siciliano, used to be residents of fair Forest Hill.) Louisiana
  10. Like: The Seacow library (Dulwich) Moxon's Cheese Block - I recently bought some cheese at West End traditional place Paxton & Whitfield in St James's (supposedly the best, and by royal appointment), and the cheese at The Cheese Block is in my opinion kept in better condition than at Paxton & Whitfield. Agreed, they can be a bit odd, but I've seen worse. butcher Green and Blue SMB for some things e.g. Rock's organic giner cordial (the best! and hardly available anywhere), oyster mushrooms Farmers - I always seem to overhear strange conversations in there most of the drinkeries are fine - there's a good range and something for everyone Surma - I've been going there since 1986! The woman who sells real cheesecake in North Cross Road market (is she still there?) hate: the amusements, the betting places crossing LL is a pain and often quite tricky. Would like to see a real baker. Also many years ago, didn't there use to be a proper greengrocer at the bottom of LL (sort of near where EDD is)? SMB is good for some things, but would like a full-scale greengrocer. I didn't realise there *was* a picture framer in North Cross Road - must get up there asap. Louisiana
  11. Mark Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > How on earth could someone escape from the police > on the 176? Actually, two blokes tried to escape onto a 176 bus I was on in Camberwell a couple of months back. They were running out of a small supermarket (the first one on the left going north, near the Green), and rushed up the stairs. Police officers were in hot pursuit and they grabbed both guys on the stairs. One went quietly, the other tried to wedge himself in the staircase, so a bit of a struggle. I though the load of them were going to land on my head. Back to the Romanians, I wonder whether these were the same two that got onto my northbound 176 bus last week - both very shabbily dressed in vaguely ethnic loose clothing with big headscarves. One sat down next to me, while the other stood over her. Romanian No. 1 then tried to slide her hand into the large bag on my lap. I was reading the paper with the paper propped up on the bag, but had my wits about me enough to figure out what was going on. She withdrew her hand, looked at me, and then went fishing in one of her own two big bags (seemingly full of many newly purchased items), with Romanian 2 trying to shield the bag. Then they both got off about three stops after they got on. The bus was packed, so little chance of doing anything about what happened. Louisiana
  12. Rob da Bank (Radio 1 DJ and bloke who runs Bestival festival on the Isle of Wight). Bumped into Mr, Mrs and baby Bank on Grove Vale last autumn (after we'd been to Bestival) and had a brief chat. Reckon they must be the reason why the Sea Cow has a presence at Bestival (the best food on the site). Louisiana new here but not in ED - around since 1986.
