  1. Where can I obtain a decent piece of fried fish (and chips) in East Dulwich? The pubs supply ghastly deep-fried, tasteless from frozen. The few remaining local ?chippies? that I have tried convert their fish to a texture-less sludge contained within a tepid coating of limp batter. Most of these outlets seem to thrive on sales of kebabs, burgers, pies and sausages. I adore simple cod-and-chips but haven?t found anything remotely pleasant nearby. I?d be most grateful to be advised of anywhere that supplies nice, firm flakey cod, fried in a crisp batter, accompanied by hot, recently deep-fried chips, together lightly sprinkled with salt and vinegar, preferably served in pages taken from yesterday?s ?Daily Mirror?. Please help
  2. I've had no Virgin TV since last thursday (SE15 4EB) Broadband and 'phone working. Bland lady says 'complex issues and our engineers are doing their best to sort it. Five days seems a bit long. Am I alone in being unable to watch my fave progs?
  3. What has happened to the foxes that lived around Goose Green, Ondine, Oglander, Marsden and Muschamp? We were irritated to find their excreta in the garden. At night, we were frequently kept awake by the sounds of their lovemaking. We were excited to watch them strolling unconcernedly along the roads in the early evenings and even in broad daylight. We were charmed and delighted to catch glimpses of their cubs. Over the last 12 months they seem to have disappeared from this locale. Can anyone advise what has happened? We miss them.
  4. Wandered down Lordship Lane today hoping for 'As much as you like buffet lunch' and was most disappointed to read a notice that the place had closed. Always called it 'The Beardie Boys' Curry House' as the proprietor and his sidekick both sported wonderful whiskers when I first started going there back in the 1980's. What is happening to the place and why did it close? Is this closure symptomatic of the decline of the curry restaurant industry in the area? Will I be forced to consume ghastly pizza's instead of prawn dhansak whenever I fancy a cheapo down Lordship Lane?
  5. My understanding is that whether your vehicle utilises the public roads or not, if it is present on a public road (parked or moving) within the boundaries of North or South Circular roads after October 2021, the owner will be charged 12.50 per day unless the vehicle meets the Mayor's emission criteria. Please advise if I have misunderstood.
  6. Ultra Low Emission Zone ? extension of scheme October 2021 I have every sympathy with Mayor Khan?s plans to reduce toxic fumes within an area boundaried by London's North and South Circular roads. However, as an impoverished pensioner and the owner of an elderly petrol-powered motor car, I am a little worried at the prospect of having to pay 12.50 per day to park outside my house. I require my motor car in order to visit my children, travel to friends and family who are spread around the country (not always conveniently placed for links via public transport) along with a range of other uses. Is anyone aware of plans for a scrappage scheme that applies to privately owned vehicles or, along with vast numbers of less-than -wealthy residents, will I be forced to give up ownership of a vehicle as a result of the crippling associated costs? How will this scheme be greeted by people even more impoverished than myself?
  7. Last night someone stole my golf clubs from my car boot (car parked on Ondine Road). They also stole my electric trolley (minus battery). To my knowledge there are not to many open fairways in the immediate vicinity. If anyone saw someone trundling around the area with a trolley and clubs please advise.
  8. I totally support CPZ sceme around Ondine, Oglander, Adys, etc. The whole area is solid with cars, skips and vans and consequently there is nowhere for residents to leave their cars. I'd happily pay #125 pa. However, we must have residents only and 8.30 to 18.00 not just 12.00 - 14.00. Payment by telephone means that any commuter can park all day and then call in and pay by phone - what is a couple of pounds to our city boys who drive to East Dulwich then train into London Bridge?
  9. Try parking during the day in Ondine Road or therabouts. Several years ago a residents (CPZ)scheme was rejected. Now, as should have been predicted it is almost impossible to find anywhere to leave a vehicle in this or the nearby streets. Please reconsider CPZ in Ondine. I'd happily pay a few quid a year to be guarranteed somewhere to park within walking distance of the house.
  10. Many thanks for recent comments. Wandered down LL yesterday (Saturday) pm. EDT - quite busy and noisy with large TV showing football ? so no thanks! The Bishop ? lots of loud music The Palmerston ? intimidated by the clinking of cutlery and the apparent hauteur of the staff Meet and Liquor ? I?m much too old Franklin?s ? nice reasonably priced pint of Guinness and glass of wine for ?er indoors. Room to sit and music pleasant and not obtrusive.
  11. Am I alone in occasionally wishing to indulge in conversation in a public house? Does anyone else ever arrange to meet someone in a local pub for a chat? Last week I arranged to meet someone for an early evening drink in the ?Flying Pig? for an early evening drink. Within its mausoleum-like interior there were two other people. Suddenly, having been served our drinks and, within about 3 minutes of our arrival the volume of the music was increased by a factor of approximately ten. This act rendered conversation almost impossible. When I requested a slight diminution in the volume and pointed out that there were not too many listeners sitting in rapt appreciation, the volume, somewhat reluctantly, was reduced by a very small margin. I have also tried to meet up with acquaintances in ?The Bishop?. A similar experience ensued. The volume of the ?music? again was approaching the intolerable and made conversation almost impossible. I would very much appreciate some guidance as to somewhere that normal humans might go in the East Dulwich vicinity to drink reasonable beer and manage to hold a conversation with one?s friends without risking long-term damage to one?s auditory facilities.
  12. Went for lunch with the wife to ?The Rye?. The menu looked interesting if solid, so anticipating a thick, juicy, flavoursome burger I ordered ?Rare Breed Dexter Beef Burger?. When it arrived, within a small rather tasteless bun surrounded by thin fries sat not one, but two beef patties. The bun also contained a slice of tomato and some cheese-like material. I assume that tomato chilli jam was also present. As I was hungry, I ate the meal. When she retrieved my plate, the pleasant waitress enquired whether I had any comments. So I asked: ?Why two patties? I pointed out that this was unusual for a restaurant or even a gastro-pub. She went to the kitchen and returned to advise me that: ?The chef said we always do it like that here.? I wonder whether any other EDF readers feel that to be charged ?13 for the equivalent of a ?Big Mac and chips? is a bit steep. Also, in order that I may avoid them in future, do any other local pubs serve two thin patties in a bun and describe such a culinary masterpiece as a? burger? and charge accordingly?
  13. Be interested in any observations regarding the local kitchen extension/loft providers as thinking of doing some work myself
  14. I'm with Virgin but I'm thinking of switching. Virgin won't match 'Introductory offers' for existing customers. I'm thinking BT maybe. I live Ondine Road. Any advice on service, broadband speed, continuity, hassles with installation etc
  15. Blake Mural opposite Goose Green playground ? a truly appalling restoration One can only applaud the intentions of the locals who cleaned up this previously pleasing mural following its desecration by the fiendish graffiti perpetrators. Unfortunately their efforts (I believe on two occasions) made to return the images to their original state have fallen somewhat short. The current mural is beyond belief in its awfulness. The figure of the bird (heron or egret) in particular is dreadful but not quite so dreadful as the lettering of Blake?s lines. Is it possible to organise a collection (or persuade the council) to fund the restoration of this splendid addition to the local environment and then cover it in some form of transparent/easily cleaned compound to preserve it in perpetuity?
  16. What is happening? Does anyone know of plans for this restaurant? I love the tired old menu and the lazy waiters. I shall miss the place if the rumour is true.
  17. What is the policy on species of tree? Outside of my house (where I park my car) is a lime tree that for several months each year exudes some sappy fluid that drops and then sticks to my car and consequently renders the windscreen and windows opaque. I am all in favour of having trees to line our streets but why select such inappropriate species?
  18. What a co-incidence that the robbery and subsequent close-down of the co-op should take place just before the first week-end opening of the new M&S. I am sure that the management of M&S will be most sympathetic to the Co-op customers who will be allowed an opportunity to defer possible starvation over the weekend by purchasing their necessities in the new store.
  19. I'm looking for accompanist for grade 3 saxophone exam (June 27 3.00 pm) in Brockley. I would also require rehearsal/run through sometime in the week before the exam. I live in East Dulwich (close to Goose Green) and have piano if rehearsal at my place

  22. A brief note of appreciation to all the artists (and their sponsors) who opened house last weekend and will do so again this Saturday and Sunday. We spend a fabulous Sunday afternoon trecking around the area and saw some fabulous work. We were greeted by really friendly and helpful local artists and their friends. In most cases prices were quite reasonable. we shall be spending this weekend 'doing' those locations we missed last week and hoping to fall in love with something that we can take home.
  23. Parking in Ondine, Oglander and thereabouts is now almost impossible due to commuters driving in from elsewhere and then parking for the day. The problem is further exacerbated by the presence of commercial vehicles and enormous 'Chelsea tractors' and the like. Several years ago a plan for parking permits was rejected by local residents. Perhaps this proposal could be revisited.
  24. Are all the inhabitants of the roads surrounding Goose Green deaf or extremely tolerant? Some generous soul elected to share their love of pop music with the local inhabitants or perhaps to establish their territorial rights within the neighbourhood at enormous volume for about three hours on Saturday evening. I suspect that some community spirited person must have contacted the environmental agency because eventually the din subsided. Is there any way, apart from closing all windows and doors and stuffing one's ears with beeswax that this abominable nuisance can be prevented?
  25. Steve has just fixed my washing machine. Arrived on time, clearly very knowledgeable and competent. Sorted the problem swiftly and economically. Also provided advice regarding how to avoid future recurrences. I have no hesitation in recommending 'Steve, the spin doctor'.
