  1. Depends if you're looking for standard UK chinese takeaway options, or the real thing! I'll go with the latter.. Fu House on Dartmouth Road in Forest Hill is worth checking out. Aside from the bog-standard takeaway options, the 'traditional dishes' section of the menu has a decent selection of Szechuan dishes. Silk Road is pretty good for food from Xinxiang, but has gone downhill a bit. Never been that impressed by the quality Wuli Wuli unfortuantely, despite having a handful of authentic-sounding Szechuan options. Apart from that you're looking at going into town where there are loads of great options.
  2. Since I started working for myself a year ago I'm always on the lookout for nice places to work from, and recently found out that Fifty Seven on North Cross Rd opens as a co-working space every Wednesday. I've been going down for the last few weeks, and highly recommend it to any freelancers living in the area. Its friendly, quiet and comfortable with decent wifi. They've got teas and filter coffee, and put on a really tasty vegetarian lunch which is a nice opportunity to chat to other people using the space. Theres some more info on their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1563862317066621/about/
  3. theres talk of a noise management plan and noise monitoring during the event - but does anyone know what actual noise limits have been agreed with the council (or where to find them)?
  4. I suspect that your doors will always be compromised acoustically by the fact that they probably don't make a perfect seal when closed. Without a nearly airtight seal, any improvement from adding double glazing will only ever be marginal unfortunately. Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but my hunch is you wouldn't get the sound insulation improvement you are hoping for..
  5. Hi, It depends a bit when the property was converted from a house into flats. Since about 2004, its been a Building Regs requirement to test the sound insulation between new-build and converted residential properties in order to verify that a certain minimum standard is met. However for older conversions and those which slipped through the net, sound insulation is often very poor (they weren't designed to be used as separate dwellings). I don't have any direct experience with properties on Therapia Road, but more often than not, the houses of that age were built in a similar way.
  6. I'd also be interested in this! Also interested to know if people have favourite places to go and work away from their homes (not necessarily to interact / network, but more just for a change of scenery). I sometimes work from Rosie's cafe on Peckham Rye, and Peckham library. I know a few people go to the Brickhouse Bakery in ED, but personally I normally find it a bit noisy and difficult to concentrate..
  7. Police have a suspect in the 'dulwich defecator' case. https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/help-cops-find-suspect-defecated-dulwich-village-street/
  8. I would also highly recommend 'Elephant' in Brixton village market. Only four choices (lamb, chicken, veg and keema I think), but they're all incredible, and even better than YHMA IMO..
  9. Thats such a shame.. Swadesh was my favourite curry place in ED, with a handful of great options not seen on the standard curry house menu. Yeah, the style of the decor was a bit dated, but to be honest thats pretty far down on my list of priorities when going for a curry! Slightly further afield, theres a great fast food style curry place on Rye Lane called 'The Grill & Pizza' (somewhat misleadingly..), with authentic Pakistani currys in metal trays at the counter. Its mainly takeaway, but they've got a few tables inside - without a table-cloth in sight!
  10. You could check what the acoustic rating of glazing units you had installed was (it will be a number and look something like 35dB Rw). I would expect that anything marketed as 'acoustic' should result in a noticeable reduction in noise compared to 1980's single glazing, even if not massive, so it seems that somethings not right. Are you sure that the noise isn't coming into your home via another path, e.g. trickle vents, lightweight external walls?
  11. Thanks for all the suggestions - much appreciated! The grocers on Nunhead Lane and the Turkish deli on Lordship Lane are good shouts. I'll give them both a try I really like SMBS and do go in there from time to time to pick up the odd thing that I cant get elsewhere, but personally I find it too expensive for day-to-day fruit and veg shopping. Sometimes I've been able to pick up decent stuff on Rye Lane, but its just a bit unreliable. Khans opposite the station isnt bad but the selection can be limited.
  12. I'd like to buy more of my fruit and veg from independent shops, but I often find that the stuff I've bought from places on Rye Lane goes bad pretty quickly. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, decent quality grocers in the area? Thanks
  13. I'm looking for a mindfulness mediation class (or something similar) in the area. I've been to a few classes in town which were great but inconvenient to get to. Apart from that I'm basically new to it all. Any suggestions? Cheers
  14. Has anyone had a good experience buying meet from any of the butchers on Rye Lane? Theres gotta be a decent one in and amongst them somewhere! Thanks
  15. Theres a shoe mender in the Rye Lane Market (indoor market by Superdrug)who does a good job, and doesn't charge too much. highly recommended!
