  1. It's not too many years ago since there wasn't even traffic lights at this junction. It is a simple suburban junction with an excellent safety record. Groover
  2. This seems to be nothing but a cynical promotion exercise for Option 8A, SRS and anything to do with cycling. So at last the Dulwich Society is showing its true stance on the Townley Rd issue - having previously said they did not take a stance on any consultation issues. Most of us will be aware that Alistair Hanton chairs the Transport Sub-Committee at the Dulwich Society. Hanton is a dedicated advocate for cycling and actually represents Southwark Cyclists on the Cycling Joint Steering Group at Southwark Council. Hardly and unbiased participant then. For many of us, Hanton lost all credibility with his behind-the-scenes support for the farcical Option 7 ? the No Right Turn design. Groover
  3. Spot on slarti b, But one must not overlook the political capital that the Labour-dominated Council are hoping to claim by prising ?285,000 out of Boris's TFL budget. They could brag about it all the way until the next local elections! They don't give a damn about the junction and the pollution the tailbacks will cause. Mark Williams and his mates even tried to put a positive spin on the announcement that the previous (NRT) proposal was being dropped -despite their best efforts to force it through. How's that for political chutzpah!
  4. The bid for this proposal to Southwark was ?285,000 overall, of which ?65,000 was for someone to teach/promote cycling. Nice one! I would do it for half that!
  5. Hi Bicknell, I'm afraid that would not work. Alleyns and JAGS have a very wide catchment area and have their own very well developed dedicated busing operation that they share with Dulwich College. They have about 9 coaches that serve a number of different routes covering a wide area. They do substitute for a large number of private journeys. DG
  6. I have observed that some saturation of the junction is caused by parents using the junction twice within a few minutes because they are dropping the kids off. It's not too much of an issue with those who use Greendale to drop off and loop back the big problem is Hillsboro Rd. So I offer up two suggestions for debate:- At Hillsboro they cut across the west-bound traffic using the cross-hatch box. This interrupts the traffic flow in BOTH directions. Then a few minutes later, after the U-turn, they emerge from Hillsboro and turn left. Invariably the west-bound traffic slows to let them out. This is double-dipping and it really messes up the efficiency of the junction and is probably the main reason that the longest tailbacks are westbound in the morning. I therefor offer up two suggestions for consideration and debate:- 1. Make Hillsborough one-way (in from EDG going East) for the first 50 metres. That way none of the local residents are inconvenienced and the Chelsea tractors can still use it but have to exit at the far end. 2.Get Alleyns to assist by using their semi-circular drive in front of the main building as a one way drop-off road ie in one gate and out the other. That way, half the Chelsea tractors would not need to use the EDG/Townley junction provided the exit from Alleys was made left turn only. Alleyns parents dropping off contribute to the problem so why shouldn't Alleyns assist with the solution? On a similar theme, if they have been given approval to use the Sea Cadets site as new parking, why not get them to use this as a part time drop off location instead?
  7. vesti Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Surely, given the limited catchment area, the > pupils can just walk. The Charter School does not have a defined catchment area - as confirmed on their web site. Quite a few of the pupils use it regularly and even more when the weather's bad. Lots also come by train to North Dulwich. DG
  8. I appreciate that there is a thread in the main section about this but many mums may not be aware of this. Children going to the Charter School on the 37 bus are going to be badly affected by the proposed changes to the East Dulwich Grove/ Townley Road junction. These changes involve narrowing the roadway and reducing the dual lanes at the traffic lights. The Southwark officials attending the drop-in session yesterday admitted that the scheme will increase the tail-backs of traffic on EDG. In the morning rush hour, the tail back at this junction often goes back as far as the hospital. If this goes ahead then it will certainly go back to around Melbourne Grove which frankly is unacceptable by any measure. It's bad enough already but this will make it worse. The only official way to oppose this scheme is to use the on-line feedback form on this link:- https://forms.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp There is another option called "10b" which will allow the traffic to flow better than it is now. To support this option it is necessary to mention 10b in the "Comments" section, as your preference.
