  1. i know it's cold, but let's not make the pollution levels even worse by having log fires today. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/13/londoners-told-to-reduce-physical-activity-on-friday-due-to-pollution
  2. good knowledge Nigello... do I take that to mean that, whilst I await the arrival of the sparrowhawk, I can lawfully kill the parakeets that eat all the bird food in my garden (see attached of 5 parakeets this morning dominating the feeder at the expense of the smaller native birds)
  3. thanks for sharing LegalAlien. LibDems have lost my vote if they are in favour of banning buses down Rye Lane. How, in a badly served area, further knackering public transport helps us with the climate emergency I don't know.
  4. thanks for the update scarletbanks are you able to settle the debate about whether this 897m was the furthest distance offered in the initial offering (in march), or the final offering, after all the movement always occurs (so presumably September)? I know from my own experience primaries always seem to quote furthest distance offered as being the initial offers, i.e. before the movement/wash-up, so the actual furthest distance offered is much further. thanks
  5. I missed this thread until just now, but very encouraged to see large scale support for reopening of bus routes down rye lane, permanently shutting them makes absolutely no sense. if the goal was to reduce traffic, it's not had the desired effect in my household as we now have to get a taxi to Denmark hill when traveling with small children and luggage. if the goal was to increase cycling, as a regular cyclist I can't say it helps, as, in my view, rye lane was fine to cycle down with buses on, and is arguably now more dangerous with pedestrians in the middle of the road. having had a well locked bike stolen from under a camera in Peckham rye bike sheds last year, after which I was told following filling in 30 minutes of forms that there's no CCTV, that's where simple focus from the council could be applied to increase cycling. shame that I missed the zoom 'consultation', please let me know if there's a link where I can submit my thoughts to the council on the matter, else will go direct via my councillor.
  6. buzzard seen yesterday from Peckham rye, fairly high up and circling, looked like roughly over nunhead cemetery.
  7. there's now a consultation on what should replace the bowling green, I've just submitted why I think a tennis court would be a great idea... /forum/read.php?5,2144121
  8. hi, just seeing if anyone would like a game of tennis at one of the local courts? don't know anyone around here who plays. I'm a somewhat out of practice probably intermediate player, 40yo, fit, and male. drop me a line if you're interested, the weather's lovely! Matt
  9. if i can add my name to any email / petition to get tennis courts on the rye, i would be more than happy to do so.
  10. We have a standard ED Victorian terrace house, with a low-ceiling cellar, which we want to be able to use for storage / putting the kids when they're too noisy / etc. The floor is earthen, and is often but not always damp, so we are limited to what we can store on it (largely, sealed plastic boxes), and it can smell damp on the ground floor when we've been away for a night or more. I'm unsure where the water comes in - by the looks of it, seeping up through the ground, but possibly from the front of the house which looks like it had a coal chute previously (?!) Has anyone had a similar problem and resolved it? Could anyone recommend a trustworthy tradesman/company to take a look? Have previously been blatantly lied to by damp-proofing snake-oil salesmen attempting to sell us work we did not need , so would really appreciate a recommendation if anyone has one? Thanks Matt
  11. I arranged for Simon to look at our boiler which had stopped working and displayed an error message. As it happened, when he turned it on, it started working and no error message appeared. He offered some thoughts on what might have caused the boiler to stop temporarily, and didn't charge us for the call out. Simon was friendly and helpful, and I would expect to call him again should the need arise.
  12. I'd recommend cycling too - back streets / park and cycle superhighway make it not nearly such a daunting prospect as it was a few years ago. 35-45 mins and you are in control of your departure times much more than public transport. Otherwise another option is to cycle to Peckham for the direct train to St Pancras (or with one change at Blackfriars - a step across the platform you get a few more departure time options).
  13. Earlier in this thread (January), it was mentioned that there would more trains on the crystal palace- Dalston junction overground line from 2018, and more on the Clapham junction- Dalston junction line in 2019... Anyone know if this is still happening? Guess not as no direct mention of it here https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/london-overground/improving-london-overground#on-this-page-0
  14. Big +1 on this for Aaron. He's just finished a third room in our house (double reception) and done a splendid job. Probably the only tradesman we've had where other tradesmen who visit always comment on what a good job has been done. Reliable, and a nice geezer. Highly recommend.
  15. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/sep/18/air-pollution-causes-jump-in-dementia-risk-study-suggests More reasons why the ULEZ extension is an excellent move, for those who base their opinions on evidence
  16. We went today and sadly the Algae is back.
  17. If anyone is interested in the occasional game of squash or tennis locally, drop me a line. I would say I'm at a reasonable standard at squash, and somewhat rusty at tennis. Haven't played much in the 5 years since I moved to ED due to having two new family members and an injury, but hoping to get back into either now. There are courts available for both locally. For ref I'm late 30s, male and fairly fit, and happy to play anyone who might be a reasonable match. Thanks!
  18. What was the model/colour of the car which caused the crash? And can you describe the young man who had presumably been driving it? This surely strengthens the case for speed cameras (mentioned on another thread elsewhere on the forum) mooted for the 20mph Barry road
  19. agree ... very selfish behaviour (and against planning regs) to develop a front garden without leaving space for bins, with the intention of permanently keeping them on the pavement. Anyone who's ever tried to navigate the pavement with a buggy (especially double or when busy) will know what I mean. If they've been deliberately left out on the pavement (as opposed to not been returned following bin day), and are blocking the way, I suggest moving them onto the entrance to the owner's front garden.
  20. we had a city jogger city mini - side by side, but still fits most victorian narrow hallways and is very easy to push around. I think it's a little larger than the mountain buggy duet (but can't be sure)... but it has suited us for almost two years. It lies flat too for tiny baby stage.
  21. Hi - we have a leak at the back of the outrigger part of our terraced house. We believe the leak is coming in from a join between brickwork, lead and roof tiles somewhere... and have been told it should just need someone with a long ladder to get up there and patch up. Any recommendations for roofers in the area that could come and look? thanks in advance
  22. TFL consultation on the proposed ultra low emission zone: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/environment/air-quality-consultation-phase-2/?cid=airquality-consultation
  23. 7% of Southwark's population are killed by PM2.5 air pollution (more are killed by air pollution as a whole, PM2.5 is only a subset of this). http://www.standard.co.uk/news/health/london-air-pollution-means-children-should-be-banned-from-playgrounds-a3431686.html The Mayor is proposing bringing in an Ultra Low Emissions Zone to Central London Zone in 2019, 17 months earlier than planned. You can respond to this proposal here - https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/environment/air-quality-consultation-phase-2/?cid=airquality-consultation Once enacted, this ULEZ could be extended all the way out to the area inside the North and South circulars. There will be a separate consultation on this in the Autumn. Please please complete this survey - it takes literally two minutes and could save your or your family member's life!
  24. hello, we are looking for someone to fit a fibreboard subfloor and wooden floor (engineered planks, with click installation) in a small bedroom 2.75m x 3.2m. Please pm with any interest or recommendations thanks
