Allegedly - it's been way too many years since my Ancient History A level but I seem to remember many historians cast doubt on his involvement in the plot. However, he deserved his fate anyway as a stinking hypocrite who preached Stoicism but grew fat on being a tutor, confidant of and apologist for some of the most wicked men and women in all recorded history. Those who fawn on Trump might do well to take him as a cautionary example!
  3. On a very nitpicking point, Seneca in fact killed himself on the orders of Nero's emissaries - but the Nero/Trump parallel is most apt.
  4. I agree with all of you! It's not the most important crime the police have to investigate - in an age of terror how could it be - but equally I'd sooner they went after anyone who hurt one of my pets than someone who keyed my car or nicked my 'phone. We'll just have to trust the police to prioritise appropriately.

  6. Y'man Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Where, exactly, do you suppose those pre & post > bomb photos were taken from? Factory roof? As far as I can guess from the angles, I reckon they were taken from the top floor of the Georgian building which abuts Sage Mews.
  7. Loz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Speaking of irrational rage, I'd love to know what > got up pop97's nose. (Not to be confused with > pop9770). I fear pop9770 may have become upset at me and others objecting to him/her describing those who objected to his/her opinions as being mentally ill - I see that account's now deactivated, whether the offensive account is related I don't know...if you're reading this pop9770, nobody ever asked for you to leave the forum, just to stop talking about mental illness in an inappropriate manner...
  8. Enough already. Reporting to admin, you can't just go around accusing people of being mentally ill because they don't agree with your extremely peculiar opinions.
  9. edhistory Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There are other places that have this story too. > > I'd still like the measurements, if someone can > volunteer to do it. Just for you I took a tape measure along when I went to Sainsbury's, the stretcher railings on Pytchley Road measure: Bed (i.e. the wire platform) 180cm x 58cm Handles 18cm each end Overall length 216 cm Depth (i.e. the height it would be off the ground when laid down) 10 cm On another issue, the factory chimney, the line you plotted for the location was very similar to mine, but I think we may have been misled: if you look at the picture again, the church spire on the extreme left of the picture can only be St.John the Evangelist, can't it? So triangulating from that and the location of the photographer (opposite the Shawbury Rd/LL junction), the chimney must be on a line roughly forty degrees off the line from photographer to church. Hope that makes sense, tried to show what I mean on the attached. ETA did Nunhead reservoir ever have a chimney for a pumping station, maybe?
  10. I'm not trying to intimidate, insult or belittle you, I'm just having a good laugh at your expense as it was the funniest thing I saw on here all year (for the uninitiated, pop used to have an account on here as Fazer1973 or some such, then he came on as pop saying "I agree with Fazer" - which might have worked if admin hadn't popped up to say it's not surprising you agree, as you are Fazer!). Please stop describing people who disagree with you as having a mental illness, it's really not on.
  11. That report is not evidence, you will note there are an awful lot of "mays" and "coulds." By contrast, a Leicester University study last year found that trees can reduce pedestrian head height levels of pollution by up to 7%. In certain very specialised scenarios (very high traffic flow, tree canopy providing 100% coverage, wind of a specific speed and direction etc) trees can hold pollutants in place - none of these circumstances pertain anywhere in East Dulwich as far as I'm aware. Please note this most important point: trees do not increase air pollution, the pollution is made by cars. Your apparent desire to cut down all the trees on our streets and in our gardens to fight pollution, rather than take measures to reduce the number of cars, would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad and so indicative of a certain all too prevalent mindset. By the way, trees serve an absolutely vital role as baffles for sound pollution, something about which I believe you feel rather strongly. Happy Christmas - do you have two place settings for pop and fazer, or do you share the same plate?
  12. I should be walking past some tomorrow, I'll have a look!
  13. That'll be where all the bloody bread's going! ETA and the bacon, the jam and the peanut butter to boot...
  14. Individual railings or the total number? If the latter, it's an awful lot, see them everywhere! I believe (though am of course willing to stand corrected!) that the stretchers were massively overordered in expectation of poison gas attacks - which is why they're metal so they wouldn't absorb the poison and could be reused.
  15. Rather than enter into a philosophical discussion of what constitutes proof, a peer-reviewed scientific paper will do me, I'm a simple man.
  16. I can open the page but it just says November 1st-February 28th 8.30-16.00, no specific Christmas times. I'd imagine though, as some people like to visit deceased relatives Christmas Day, it will be open. ETA on the Bereavement services page it says "We are committed to open the cemeteries, crematorium and garden of remembrance 365 days a year."
  17. These are the times on the DLC website: 23rd December ? Normal Hours Christmas Eve ? 07:00-16:00 Christmas Day ? CLOSED Boxing Day ? CLOSED 27th December ? 07:00-18:00 28th December ? Normal Hours 29th December ? Normal Hours New Year?s Eve ? 07:00-16:00 New Year?s Day ? CLOSED 2nd January ? 07:00-18:00 3rd January ? Normal Hours Which differs in at least four respects from the times on Southwark's website! Left hand, this is your right hand, I don't believe you've met... Not your fault though Mr.B, happy Christmas and thanks for being accessible for the forum this year!
  18. Have you a link to said scientific proof please, and more appositely to proof that streets with trees have higher pollution levels in parts per million than streets without? In a rainforest, yes, smoke etc can stay trapped under the canopy. We don't have rainforests in London. If air "is suppressed at ground level" by trees on streets barometric pressure would be higher on streets with trees than those without. Which it isn't.
  19. Ian, he said he was going on the 19th, maybe he's gone on holiday after that date and isn't checking the forum. I'm sure there's nothing personal.
  20. We've managed to get in touch with the owners and they're on their way to pick up "Maximus" as I write, so a happy ending! Huge thanks to Sarah of this forum who alerted me to the missing notice on the Herne Hill forum and texted me a poster from HH station with the owners' number on, you've been instrumental in making sure they're back together in time for Christmas. Maximus had been missing since December 11th I believe yet turned up on a street adjoining his own, so may well have been shut in somewhere - a timely reminder that cats will creep in sheds, garages etc for warmth, so do please give them a once over before locking up, especially if you're going away over Christmas!

And isn't it better that local businesses are getting their stock from a local outlet providing employment for local people? And have I just made East Dulwich sound like Royston Vasey? As for the scandal of caf?s buying bread then through some magical process turning it into sandwiches, well surely nothing short of a parliamentary enquiry is needed into this abhorrent practice. ETA and seriously, moaning about not being able to get one type of bread on a street packed with bakers, convenience stores, supermarkets etc selling every conceivable variety of said product, when 795 million people in the world are starving, is such a first world problem it's off the scale.
  22. A friend had this little 'un turn up on her doorstep in Hinton Road, Herne Hill, this evening, miaowing and seemingly very distressed though not physically harmed. She's taken it in for the night and will take it to a vet/RSPCA tomorrow morning to see if it has a chip, but if you know him/her let me know - will be out from early morning tomorrow so best to text me on 07412997226. Cheers, Rendel
  23. And board it over for bowls, apparently! Evans is in a new build next building along towards the Rye, probably since your time. Very interesting to hear your memories, cheers.

Unfortunately the Clippers don't count towards the Oyster daily cap, they're charged outside, so ?6.20 single on top of whatever you spend on buses, trains and tubes, but I agree they are a lovely way to travel for an occasional treat.
  25. Sounds like the building which is now Evans Cycles at the front with DLC at the back (facing onto CP road) must stand right where the baths were, sure somebody can confirm? I'd love to know the distinction between the first class and second class baths! ETA just looked it up, of course, same building, still there - the one next to Evans, must snake round the back to CP road. Despite cycling past there at least three times a week have never looked up to see the inscription! A lesson to slow down and look around a bit...
