Immigration Investigation Van (last Tuesday)
rendelharris replied to lavender27's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's a fine point and someone will be along in a moment bawling "snowflake generation," no doubt, but the offence caused lies in the way the term "illegal immigrant" makes the person, and not what they're doing, illegal. We don't refer to other offenders against the law as "illegal people," the characterisation of the person as the offence exists solely for immigrants. It's a way of dehumanising. As the holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel wisely said, "no human being is illegal." Just to caution against using such catchall terms, "illegal immigrants" can include those trafficked to Britain to work in the sex trade, victims of forced marriage, those brought to Britain as spouses then divorced...words are powerful and terms do matter. -

Immigration Investigation Van (last Tuesday)

Nigello Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Rendel - Please show us your source. http://icinspector.independent.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/ICIBI-Report-on-illegal-working-17.12.2015.pdf Sections 5.18/5.19 (pg 23): 5.18 IE have no statutory power of entry to search for immigration offenders. Officers may apply to a magistrate (or sheriff in Scotland) for a warrant to enter premises for specified purposes without requiring the owner?s consent, or may gain entry with the ?informed consent? of someone in authority at the premises. IE guidance describes ?informed consent? as ?a person?s agreement to allow something to happen after the person has been informed of all the risks involved and the alternatives? 5.19 In the past, IE had made extensive use of Section 28CA of the Immigration Act 1971. This allowed officers to enter business premises and make arrests with a Home Office Assistant Director?s authority (an ?AD letter?) in specific circumstances without recourse to a warrant. Our 2014 report An Inspection of the Use of the Power to Enter Business Premises Without a Search Warrant found that there had been widespread non-compliance with the guidance and ineffective assurance processes but also that senior managers had identified this issue and were beginning to improve performance and compliance. Section 5.48 (pg 30): There were inconsistencies in operational practice in a number of areas, which pointed to deficiencies in officer training, supervision and assurance. The areas included: reconnaissance (?recces?) of target premises; use of non-directed surveillance; obtaining lawful entry to premises; pursuit, cautioning, questioning, and use of handcuffs. Failure to apply the law correctly and to follow IE guidance in relation to any and all of these compromises the Home Office and the officers involved, as well as infringing the rights of the individuals affected. I fear we must have slightly different definitions of "harebrained."

Immigration Investigation Van (last Tuesday)
rendelharris replied to lavender27's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Did it say "Immigration Enforcement"? A dodgy bunch, they dress and use vehicles like coppers but actually aren't. They're supposed to use warrants to raid premises they suspect of housing or employing illegal immigrants but actually in more than 50% of cases they claim "informed consent," which can basically be made to mean anything they want it to mean. -
Trains cancellations - latest
rendelharris replied to DovertheRoad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Don't often get the train but did today and at every station and onboard announcement Southwest Trains made a point of saying their new timetable starts December 11th (Sunday) and that everyone should check the website. The way they were pushing it made it sound as though there would be significant changes so may be worth checking if your route will be affected if you're heading that way: https://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/plan-your-journey/timetables/download-timetables2/ -
Complaining to Southwark about offstreet parking

Life really might be a bit too short, plus surely you'd only get one ball out of the thick end of each carrot? An alternative might be to source Parisian Market carrots, which are almost spherical (about an inch in diameter) and very delicious. Not the season for them but posh emporia might have frozen/out of season ones (though probably at a stiff price). Alternatively, if you're bored with the same old same old, roasted radishes with thyme, olive oil and sea salt, finished with lemon juice, make an interesting substitute.

Trains just getting worse? What can we do?

Amazing isn't it, and a sign that May is definitely going to pull the Tories rightwards. -

I'm afraid the government have scuppered that this very day, they've completely cancelled previous undertakings: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/dec/06/transport-for-london-plans-ditched-chris-grayling-sadiq-khan -

Not that it really matters, but another definition from Collins: Mugging (noun): an act of robbery with violence, esp in the street Mugging and robbery are synonymous.
-
Oxford dictionary: Mugging (noun): An act of attacking and robbing someone in a public place:?he was the victim of a brutal mugging?

Bit odd to have a no right turn sign as it's impossible to do a right turn without going over the central reservation anyway! But the no U-turn sign by the first gap which is on your picture definitely wasn't there today. It must surely have been pinched or something, they can't seriously have decided U turns there are now permissible.

A) Bloody rude, the vast majority of bus drivers I come across as a passenger and as a cyclist sharing the road with them are cautious and courteous and certainly not thick - far better than most other professional drivers. B) The stopping distance for an ordinary saloon travelling at 40KPH is 20 metres. That's about ten car lengths. Stopping distance for a double decker obviously greater by an order of magnitude. If you think it's safe to change lane with five car lengths to spare and then object to being flashed it's not the bus driver who's thick...

There's a burst watermain on the South Circular opposite Horniman Gardens, the outflow of which is running down the hill towards the Grove. There were people working on it at 13.30 but it's making the surface unpleasantly greasy and it'll only get worse as the temperature drops towards rush hour, so two wheeled travellers may wish to consider an alternative route.
-
Well, having just ridden past there I can say you might win your domestic, the no U-turn sign in that picture I posted, by the first gap opposite Woodvale, is indeed no longer there. The first no U-turn sign is now down by the pelican crossing.
-
Riding that way shortly, I'll keep an eye out!

The undertaking which goes on on Herne Hill and Denmark Hill takes place illegally in the bus lanes - the only places there are two lanes is where there's a bus lane, so nothing to do with lane discipline. ETA and the speed limit on the entire stretch is 20MPH, so unless someone's doing less than that, which one never sees, the undertaker is also breaking the speed limit.
-
Well unless someone's pinched it...

I think you've answered your own point, you complain that politicians haven't focussed enough on walking, then say "walking is much, much less requiring of a specific infrastructure and special equipment, etc." The infrastructure for walking is already present in the shape of pavements. You're the first person I've seen to complain that there's not enough investment in walking - your casual sideswipe at fools on bikes rather reveals an extra anti-cycle agenda. The majority of commuters in this neighbourhood work in central London, so walking to work is not really a practical option. There's also a matter of time pressure, you say people should walk two miles, which takes forty minutes plus for the average person, a journey which can easily be accomplished in ten minutes or fewer by any cyclist. That means the cyclist has an extra hour in their day not spent on travel, a pretty significant number.
-
Because at the only gap in the central reservation there's a no u-turn sign.

Hmm. How many people in East Dulwich do you think live within easy walking distance of their workplace, compared to those who live within easy cycling distance? And can you give an example of a cycling scheme which has been detrimental to pedestrian access?

Quietway junction - crowd funding (Dulwich Village)
rendelharris replied to Bicknell's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think Dulwich Estate only own the road from the tollgate up to Fountain Drive (which is actually an excellent safe section as there's so little traffic, due to the tollgate). From the tollgate northwards those roads belong to Southwark, I believe. I'm no fan of Dulwich Estate but I don't think they're a player in this.
