If you want to stick to the letter of the democratic process, the referendum was totally non-binding on government and they could legally completely refuse to implement its demands if they wished. Even though I don't like the referendum result, I accept that would be wrong, given the undertakings given beforehand. However, allowing parliamentary scrutiny of any deal made by government is not outside the democratic process - allowing a small cabal of cabinet ministers to agree on a deal and force it through without due scrutiny from our elected representatives, that would be truly undemocratic.
  2. One thing all parties, here and in the US, need somehow to address is voter apathy. I was astonished to see these figures this morning: 231,556,622 eligible US voters 46.9% didn't vote 25.6% voted for Clinton 25.5% voted for Trump 1.7% voted for Johnson Really almost more worrying than the fact that a quarter of Americans voted for Trump is the fact that in a country which prides itself on its democracy, which has as strongly defined a notion of citizenship as any free nation in modern history, nearly half the electorate couldn't be arsed to vote.

Drop the ego Quids, not everything is all about you - by "glorious" and "righteous" anger I was referring to the way Trump and his supporters would like it to be seen, nothing to do with anything you or Louisa said. And were I childish enough to have a "baddy camp" Louisa wouldn't be in it.

I said I thought it was insulting to the working class, not just the white working class. As I pointed out, the majority of white middle class voters also voted Trump, so this result is not simply the righteous white working class anger Trump would like it to be seen as, it's far, far more complex, more selfish and less "glorious" than that.

Actually I don't care if it's wrong, I hope the bastard drops dead before he can do the harm he's promised. Though I have no idea what Pence is like, presumably if prepared to be on the same ticket as that filth not terribly nice.
  7. Louisa, what you say simply isn't the case and is really quite insulting to the working class whom I believe you generally support. Of the one third of Americans who earn less than $50,000 a year, more voted for Clinton than Trump, for the 2/3 earning more than that, vice versa. 54% of college educated white males voted for Trump. White college educated women were the only white group who voted in favour of Clinton (and then only 51% of them). Trump would be delighted to have people think this is some great uprising from the deprived heartlands, but in fact it's got just as much to do with middle class whites who want lower taxes and to stop paying for Obamacare and other social security as anything else.

Yes - Feminax Ultra which contains 250mg (not ml, that would really do you some damage!) Naproxen and is available without prescription - has the same effect no matter what it's advertised for (it also has a built in gastro protector)! But no matter, glad you're set up now.

Yes - and even, surprisingly, a large number of Sanders voters may have voted Trump: when Sanders lost out surveys showed a significant percentage of blue collar workers had Trump as their second choice, seeing them as the only two non "Washington elite" candidates, no matter what party.

Yes true - been an interesting subject to look into, apparently although the writing's generally the same the differences in pronunciation are so marked that a Mandarin speaker can't understand a Cantonese speaker and vice-versa even if they are reading from exactly the same text.
  13. Sorry to hear this Fox - Naproxen is now available from pharmacists without prescription, so if you can get to a chemist that might at least help in the short term. Get well soon.

This is a whole new level of lunacy we've got right now.
  16. On lots of similar devices you can default to factory settings by holding the power button down for thirty seconds - any good?
  17. I'm still desperately watching, like having one's choice tenth at the last fence in the National and thinking well, if all the other nine fall here...
  18. Somebody please tell me I'm still in a nightmare...California has legalized marijuana - they're going to need it tomorrow...
  19. Thanks for the headsup, hadn't heard of this. Wonder if it'll be all jazz, or as Jazz FM too often is, middle of the road soul music? (Don't get me wrong I love (good) soul, but when I want jazz I want jazz!)

"We could all take the moral high ground but I expect loads of you pay cash in hand for manual work in particularly building." I expect they do Malumbu (having only recently moved from a service charge funded block I have yet to face the temptation) but that's not quite the same as saying "I'm only paying you minimum wage because you're bound to be on the fiddle, may be here illegally and are probably claiming benefits," which is what the OP was saying.

Some studies have shown that your dominant hand works faster than the other, so if you're right handed it may well be that with the O under your right hand and the R under your left the right has just got ahead of the rhythm. I do exactly the same!

A) The minimum wage is an absolute joke - less than ?6 an hour for an 18-year-old - try paying the London living wage instead; B) If you suspect someone's abusing the system in this way why are you colluding with them?
  23. Nice - love the way, like me, he still runs his hands through hair that isn't there any more!
  24. The reasons you give for withdrawing your boy mean you have a case for non-provision of agreed services so breach of contract - I'd suggest, as they did these things, you have a case for refund of all fees paid, not just the unexpired portion. I meant to add to previous, when I went to small claims I found the judge to have one of the sharpest minds I've ever come across (and my barrister sister tells me this is very common) - if you have a good case s/he'll cut through any bluster and see the facts. Good luck!
  25. Fair point Mick Mac - watch yourself, Dover. In the current climate there may be an above average number of meatheads out to prove what they regard as a point. Though personally if I see anyone hard enough to wear a kilt in the traditional manner in this weather I'd steer well clear...
