  1. I've been thinking about the notice boards for while, so I was really interested to read these posts. They seem like such a potentially great and simple community resource, I'd be sorry to see them go. It's almost inevitable they'll be vandalised if they're not kept up to date, I suppose. I'm going to drop a line to our councillors and see if anything comes of it.
  2. It's always a risk when you use a bike, that some bugger will find a way to nick it. I don't have the option of storing mine indoors - it either goes up steep narrow stairs, through the flat then down steep and slippery stairs out the back, or storage needs to be on the street. For myself, I'm still prepared to at least approach the council, and use the best locks that I can afford. Your message is a good reminder to double lock and cover your bike. At the very least, a request will underline to Southwark that there are plenty of people who want to use their bikes, and if nothing else, it supports their aim of making the roads more bike-friendly. And you never know, Whateley Road might get another hangar - nothing ventured, nothing gained.
  3. Would anyone else like another Cyclehoop hangar on Whateley Road? Either because you would use it (we're in a first floor flat with narrow stairs - heave-ho) or because you would simply support the idea of one? I know of two more people already in need of the storage, but Southwark are more likely to act if there is strong support from those around us. I'm happy to fill out the form and contact the council on our behalf. I like a deadline, so I'm going to send a form in the first week of October. Please send me a message if this would help you, and spread the word. Here's a link to some info: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/cycle-parking-guide/

  5. Story Jam is a local storytelling night - We're just a bounce further down from the Horniman. We bring you a fresh line-up of professional tellers telling cracking stories for grownups each month, in a great little venue with an excellent bar and kitchen. So why tell you lovely East Dulwichites about it? Because we live in East Dulwich. Because we don't have a storytelling night this side of the hill. And because we're looking for somewhere on or off Lordship Lane to run a more family-orientated event. Perhaps you'd like to come and be entertained and see if you'd like to bring us closer to home. Tickets ?7/?6 concs. (tickets on the night on the door from 7pm) [email protected] www.storyjamjar.com This month at Story Jam... RACHEL ROSE REID with Sybilla. "On your walk through the woods, you take a pause for breath. The leaves rustle, and something inside you answers back." Whilst walking 200 miles through a remote part of Italy last year, Rachel collected folk tales, mythology, local gossip, and the stories of families who've lived on the same land for generations. www.rachelrosereid.com 'polished and compelling' The Independent 'immense skill and breathless conviction' The Times DANNY SCHEINMANN with The Mahabharata. Danny will be attempting a death defying storytelling feat. He will tell the first half of The Mahabharata, an ancient Indian epic consisting of 1 million stanzas and 18 times longer than the bible, best known for a tiny section at its heart known as the Bhagavad Gita. This extraordinary story is at once profound and profane, fantastical and philosophical. It tells of one family that divides in rancour and goes to war, pitting cousin against cousin and teacher against pupil in the most brutal of battles. But don't worry he will cut corners, take liberties and deliver this story in a fast, furious and physical way, improvised to live music. Anything could happen. It's risky, it's a high wire act and it's never been attempted in the West! Watch one man pit himself against the biggest, most beautiful story ever told. Will Danny survive or fall to an ignominious death? Plus Story Jam's very own LUCY LILL tells the fourth 5 minute installment of our serial story, The Sly Thief of Valenciennes. Will the King catch the thief? Will the thief catch the girl? There really is only one way to find out.... As ever, Canvas & Cream will be serving up a storm of food, wine and tea. Make sure you get your loyalty card stamped.

You are very warmly welcome. This month expect slippery tales of not-quite-humans, a branch of a tree of words, a sneaky thief with sticky shoes, leaping fish and drunken gods. Traditional stories told for here and now. More details on our website www.storyjamjar.com and on facebook www.facebook.com/Story Jam. The important bits: 7.30pm - 9.30pm(ish) ?7/?6 (tickets on the door from 7pm) Canvas & Cream, 18 London Rd, Forest Hill (right by the bus stop for the 185,176 and 40)
  7. Hi, Any up-to-date recommendations for a good sparks for a smallish kitchen job would be very warmly welcomed.
  8. Thank you, again. I'm busy sending out feelers, based on your recommendations. All ideas gratefully accepted.
  9. Your memory is spot on, Sue. Thanks. That's enormously helpful.
  10. The thought of my mother morris dancing is distressingly hilarious. I think a good english ceilidh should be the right balance of silly and brilliant.
  11. Thank you all. Having had a look at these bands websites, I think we're looking for something more English and preferably more wild. My fault for saying Ceilidh rather than Country Dance. Any ideas?
  12. We're looking for a barn dance or ceilidh band to gallop around to at our wedding in September. We're trying to do everything as locally as possible. Can anyone recommend one?
