  1. Just drawing attention to a great local job opportunity for any events professionals in the ED area. Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, one of the top drama schools in the UK, is moving to Peckham later this year (it's the building under construction next to Peckham Library) and is looking for an Events Manager. Details here (and of other roles): https://www.mountview.org.uk/everything-else/jobs/ They will also have spaces for hire, so worth noting if you're planning an event. (I'm not connected with Mountview but know them through work/professional interest).
  2. Now re-posted in Business section.
  3. Sitting in the garden enjoying a vastly inflated glass of Prosecco and catching up on the papers. Soundtrack of planes, distant sirens, children playing a few doors down, grass being cut, shrubs being pruned, people enjoying a drink outside the pub, diy going on somewhere, birdsong and music from the Rye. Even with all its issues, London in the summer is a wonderful, tolerant place for everyone to enjoy in so many ways. And that's not the Prosecco talking!
  4. it's unlikely that Brexit will affect the implementation of the GDPR in the UK. The principles are that individuals will have more rights than under the existing legislation re. the collection, use, access to and and deletion of their personal data; organisations therefore have greater responsibility for ensuring that personal data is collected, used, processed, stored and deleted properly, and that it's clear to their customers/users/clients how their information is handled. They also need to be able to demonstrate that proper policies and procedures for data handling are in place and followed. There are lots of scare stories, myths and dubious advice 'out there' - definitive information for both individuals and organisations working in different sectors is available via the ICO website and Twitter account. https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/ @ICOnews (I'm not connected with the ICO, but have had to deal with this for work. Dull but essential - and generally A Good Thing, IMHO).
  5. Wilko had a decent selection of frames last week. (I happened to be in Woolwich, but there are branches in Penge and Bromley). Or Snappy Snaps.
  6. Serving Nunhead, East Dulwich, Peckham and beyond, The Ivy House in Stuart Road is the first pub to be saved by community purchase under the Localism Act, a historic Grade II-listed building, and winner of an English Heritage ?Heritage Angel? award. Since the building was bought by the local community and re-opened, we have been trading for 3 years, and have built a reputation as a welcoming community pub and live venue with a great range of real ale and craft beer and an innovative wine list. Jack, our excellent manager, is moving on and we're seeking a replacement to build on our success. Please spread the word if you know anyone who might be interested; full details of the role and how to apply are here: http://ivyhousenunhead.com/docs/ManagerSept2016.pdf Applications close on Monday October 3rd!
  7. I'd also recommend Davies & Vaughan - have sent a PM.

    Redundancy

Make sure that the process is being handled properly by your employer and that you know your rights - it will put you in a better position if anything is negotiable. If you're a trade union member, get advice from the union asap. If not, ACAS offers excellent free information/advice and an employee helpline. http://www.acas.org.uk/?articleid=1611
  9. Greenwich Theatre is currently showing three LAMDA final year productions (until Tuesday 15th). Talented young actors, an interesting mix of plays (take your pick from Tennessee Williams, Martin Crimp or Stella Feehily via George Farquhar) and very reasonable ticket prices - what's not to like? www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk
  10. Another recommendation for Clive. He came round last week within an hour of my call to fix a (non-emergency) problem with a seized tap, took great care to sort it out properly and didn't charge the earth!
  11. It's definitely free! 'Unofficial site' = scam.
  12. You can joke, but this stuff is a menace, especially to elderly/vulnerable people who can be scammed into parting with 0000s of ?s for 'prize draws', rubbish merchandise, guaranteed fortunes, etc. . See the link below if you need convincing. http://www.thinkjessica.com// The advice is to report it (details on the website) and never, ever, respond or send any money, unless you want to be put onto a so-called 'suckers list' which will be passed on to even more of these scammers (aka criminals). As most of it comes from overseas, it's hard to stop, but the authorities are on to it.
  13. I have no personal interest in or view on this particular licence application. However, I'm querying why exactly James Barber is asking people to make representations to the licensing committee after the statutory consultation period has ended? The applicant has gone through the proper process, displayed the statutory notice and placed an advert in the local press. (The licensing team will have checked, so James or anyone else failing to spot it is irrelevant. Anyone who is interested - e.g. councillors - can also check the licensing register regularly to find all current licence applications). Licensing law isn't perfect, and it's an emotive topic, but the process is designed to make sure that interested parties have plenty of time to make representations within 28 days of the application being submitted. There has only been 1 representation from a local resident, which is why the application has to go to committee; representations from the police and trading standards (statutory authorities) appear to have been withdrawn following conciliation. The people have spoken (or not), so to try to whip up opposition (or support) now is unfair and unjustified.
  14. Suggesting that street lights should be switched off at 1a.m. (i.e. overnight, when it's dark) kind of misses the point.... If you're being kept awake by the light, and a light-deflecting shield isn't an option, heavy curtains, a blackout blind (Ikea) or an eye mask should do the trick. (You may look like Dick Turpin, but won't have your beauty sleep disturbed by the light, artificial or otherwise).
  15. Ignore the sarcasm - 6a.m. (sometimes even earlier) is far too early for a residential area. I suggest you call the Veolia depot in Croydon first and complain directly; this helped for a few weeks, but you may need to keep on the case with them and with the Council! Can't find the Croydon depot number, but got it by calling their main number: 020 7812 5000.
