  1. This is great. The changes to Champion hill have added up to ten minutes to my journey to work and now the inspired and ill thought out changes to the end of Court Lane adds another ten minutes. That's twenty minutes of my car sitting there burning fossils, can't afford an electric, would love one, can't take a bus (genetic reasons) and cycle when I can.
  2. The Dulwich Art Group and School is hosting a masterclass and demonstration by well known landscape artist David Sawyer. Sunday the 5th January 2.00pm ? 5.00pm Refreshments available Watching David work is always an inspiration, he achieves so much so quickly and with great economy. He is a practical, working artist who has supported himself as a painter since leaving art college. When you watch how he works you will benefit from his years of experience painting in and around Europe and the UK. He knows how much to pull from the scene, where to put the focus and where to let the eye do the work. The sort of stuff you either spend a lifetime working out for yourself or you learn from a fellow journeyman. We?re lucky that he has agreed to give a masterclass for us on Sunday the 5th January from 2.00pm ? 5.00pm. He will be creating a landscape painting much as he would en plein air but using visual reference material, including video. He will explain what he is doing as he goes along and will of course answer questions. This is a demonstration and a chance to observe rather than a participatory event, so no need to bring your paints although a notebook might be handy to gather up the pearls as they are cast before us. David?s work is instantly recognisable, his rich colours and lyrical marks are his own but the principles he adheres to when he paints are universal. We may be familiar with some of the process he will discuss but when we see how it how it applies to what he is doing it all makes so much more sense to us as painters. Even if we are not painters, watching a true expert doing what they do best is a hypnotic and riveting experience. The last time David demonstrated for us he held the room in thrall with many of us forgetting to breathe. If you are joining David on his Landscape course on Thursdays in 2020 then this is a good way of priming yourself and if you are thinking about coming and painting with him in the Spring in Provence this will be a chance to meet him. We want as many people to see David paint as possible so we are only charging a nominal ?5 for this event. Looking at what other artists are up to is one of the best ways of getting motivated about your own work. Actually watching a serious expert building an image before your eyes could provide the sort of kick start we all need at the beginning of the year. The masterclass is at: The Dulwich Art Group 4a Champion Hill London SE5 8AH More info is on our website here: https://www.dulwichartgroup.co.uk/events/masterclass-in-landscape-painting-with-david-sawyer/
  3. Just added eight minutes to my fifteen minute commute. That's eight minutes with the engine running so my carbon footprint is 50% up this morning. I cannot see who this is helping. And I do need to take a car most days.

  6. Mixed Ability Oil Painting Class Monday 6th June - 11th July 2016 ? Six Weeks 10am-4pm for Figure Painting with a nude model 7.00pm-9.00pm for Still Life Painting Fees for six weeks: ?360 Life Painting ?150 Still Life Location: Dulwich Art Group 4 Champion Hill, London SE5 8BT Acclaimed artist Clare Haward?s work appears in galleries around the country and many private collections. Her quixotic approach to painting confounded the presenters on the recent Sky Landscape Artist of the year for which she was selected. Her approach is rigorous and sensual, sensitive to colour and composition, edge and tone. Clare is acutely aesthetic with an exquisite colour sense and best of all she?s a fine communicator. You will: *Aquire the skills to paint the human figure or still life in natural colour *Learn about oil paint ? colour mixing and application *Work alongside Clare in the proven ?studio school? system Squint, step back and think abstractly. This six-week class will look at colour, light and shade and abstraction to create vibrant figurative paintings from the live model. You will be encouraged to think about composition, colour value, edge quality, abstraction, geometry, paint mixing and application, using a direct method of oil painting. Each week will bring a new pose and we will work on the ?premier coup? ? ?one shot? painting. Clare will talk and demonstrate and then support us as we paint the model ourselves. She will paint alongside us making it easy to observe and ask questions, this is the strength of the studio school. Each class will run from 10.00am until 4pm with a half hour break for lunch. We have modestly priced light lunches, coffee, tea and biscuits available. Over the six weeks of the course complete beginners will learn how to block out a painting, how to mix colours, how to look for the important formal qualities that excite us along with all the general housekeeping of the paintbox. More experienced artists will refine their approach learning how to see in a more sophisticated way and to produce finished works that reflect most completely what has been seen. If you?d like to talk to Clare about any aspect of this course please email her directly on [email protected] or ring the Dulwich Art Group on 0770 4450 169
  7. Painting and Drawing for the Young Artist with the Dulwich Art Group After school art club for children ages 7-11 Course leader - Claire Wright Thursday afternoons 12th November - 19th December 4.15pm - 5.45pm (1? hours) At the Copleston Centre, Copleston Road SE15 4AN All children are artists. Give them the right stimulation, some good materials and they are off. Seeing what other children do around them and being shown new ways of image making helps them to explore their own visual responses to the world around them and to gain useful new skills as they go. ? Drawing in pencil, crayon, ink, pastel ? Painting in watercolour, tempera and acrylic. ? Mixed media and collage ? Print making ? Drawing and painting from life and the interior world By nurturing a child's natural creativity we also help them to develop life tools that will bring rewards throughout their lives: * Spontaneous problem solving, * Having the confidence to speak with their own voice, * An enduring love of visual beauty which informs all that they do * An inner sense of ?rightness?, * The ability to sustain attention * Developing a process from observation to action. * The freedom to drop redundant approaches and move on * Maintaining ?play? as a relevant mental structure into maturity At the Dulwich Art Group we believe that a combination of demonstration, explanation and personal exploration are the keys to learning in the visual arts and that learning to see is the central component. During each six week module children will be introduced to drawing and painting from life and imagination in a variety of media. They will begin to develop the craft skills required to show others what they have seen. They will be encouraged to reflect upon and talk about what they have produced. They will have a great deal of fun in a safe and purposeful atmosphere and will produce work that will support them in applications to secondary school. - Healthy refreshments supplied - All materials provided - Protective clothing available Cost ?90 for six sessions. Please visit our website to register - www.dulwichartgroup.co.uk
  8. Just to update all those of you who helped us find a new venue with your kind thoughts and ideas. We've settled at the Copleston Centre in Copleston Road SE15. We have managed to keep all of the groups going on the same days and times to minimise disruption to artist's routines. We had our first session yesterday and the cool of the church was a definite bonus. It's not technically Dulwich any more but we know lots of artists who live around the Bellenden Road area so we're hopeful we'll pick up some new members to make up for the inevitable loss of those who will no longer be able to walk to us. If you like drawing or painting and haven't for a while, why not join us? our website is www.dulwichartgroup.co.uk
  9. Thanks for the suggestion dontpanic, certainly will have a look at the Peckham Liberal Club.
  10. Anyone see the front page of the South London Press? Journalist Jack Griffith spotted this thread and wrote a story about us. Sorry Vik, they call it a sea scout hut too...
  11. Thanks Bawdy-nan, we're looking at the Francis Peek centre next week, didn't know about the upstairs room at the library but will enquire. Yes, good heating is essential, some models are pretty robust, others are thin skinned and sensitive to draughts.
  12. Hi RCH, yes, it might be good to have a chat some time. We're just artists discovering the complexities of gaining access to the resources of the community/establishment. Not sure why independent artists always seem to get the fuzzy end of the lollipop, we got unceremoniously kicked out of the Calton Centre four years ago, with almost no notice at all. They said they were refurbishing the building but they opened a similar style local authority art class in the same room two weeks later. So I guess we're used to it. I can't quite see why decisions that are made that disrupt our activities have to be kept from us until the last moment, when they can do us real damage. We're nice people after all. Haven't tried Bellenden Scout Hut, anyone got contact details? Yes, I have tried google.
  13. What *we* need is a purpose built arts centre...(can dream) When we were driving around looking for new premises it was amazing how quickly things don't feel 'local'. The Scout Hut feels local to Dulwich and East Dulwich but you only have to go half a mile in any direction and it feels like you're somewhere else. We have quite a few artists who walk and others who take trains and buses and some who drive. The Scout Hut has parking, is on a bus route and around the corner from a couple of railway stations, which makes the location ideal for us. The Dulwich Hospital site would indeed be ideal as would the Fred Francis Centre. Can you make it happen RCH? Bawdy-nan you clearly know which levers to pull, very impressive.
  14. They've actually been pretty good at sharing up until now, reasonable rates, flexible, excellent facilities manager, which makes the suddenness of this all the more inexplicable.
  15. Regarding asking them if they have other spaces available, I can only speak for the Dulwich art Group but they (JAGS)say that they have nothing for us. It's odd really because as we built up the membership of our groups we sought repeated assurances that they would find us another space when the time came for redevelopment. They always told us that whatever happened they would make sure we had a place to be. Feels a bit shabby to us. Thank you to those who are suggesting alternative locations by private message.
  16. JAGS are finally building their new music school and so are kicking out all the groups that use the Old Scout Hut in Greendale. We were given 11 weeks notice, and are hastily looking for a home for the four groups we run each week. Finding somewhere is hard, is anyone else affected by this? We would be prepared to share resources in the search for new premises. simon
  17. A long pose which will be held for the whole session and then for two further weeks so that complex drawings or even paintings can be completed. The Dulwich Art Group is an established and friendly group with all the equipment required to support you in your drawing. We take care over our models too, long poses are demanding for the model so most of ours are dancers or actors who know how to maintain a pose without wriggling. Attending a new life drawing group can be daunting, most of us just want to be left alone to get our bearings so we respect that. However if you want comments about your work they are easy to solicit, we have people of all abilities and approaches. Our Friday group is just starting but we do run sessions on other days too, including occasional masterclasses and educational events. We like the drop-in format and so do most artists, it means you can just turn up if you have the time, no need to book. We have easels, drawing boards and large paper and charcoal at 20p per piece or bring your own materials. Our website is worth a look here http://www.dulwichartgroup.co.uk you'll also find us on Facebook if that's your thing. Wednesdays from 12.00pm until 3.00pm. Thursdays from 7.00pm until 9.00pm Fridays from 1.00pm until 4.00pm Saturdays from 10.00am until 1.00pm. Cost ?12 per session. Location: The Old Scout Hut, Greendale, Dulwich SE22 8TX
