If your child is at a private long-day day nursery, the fee may go down when they reach 3. But I think it's true to say most of these nurseries wouldn't ctake achild just for a few hours per day. Try Buds, Puddleduck, (Dulwich Wood?)

http://www.payingforchildcare.org.uk/Data/Sites/1/Factsheets/general%20help%20with%20childcare%20costs%20Apr09.pdf Not all private nuseries will accept the grant, you should check Asquith nurseries info re the grant - "4. When do I get the Nursery Education Grant? Your child is entitled to the grant the school term after their 3rd birthday. The nursery is required to complete a number of forms for the Local Education Authority. The Nursery Manager will identify all eligible children through our registers and computer system and will apply for the grant on your behalf. Some Local Education Authorities require you to complete a form, however this will be given to you by the Nursery Manager. The Nursery Education Grant will be automatically deducted from the fees and will appear on the invoice as NEG grant " http://www.asquithnurseries.co.uk/approach/faq.asp

Tyrrell Road..is this in the school black hole?
Fuschia replied to prdarling's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Rye Oak looks to be a nice school. Actually, I'd be careful about movong within the central ED area, where you are closest to Heber, say, but not close enough! That's where the "black hole" will be... where you are more than, say, 500m from your closest (and very oversubscribed!) school. If you are within a few hundred metres of ANY school, and you put it down, you should be guaranteed a local place, which is the issue atm. This will be all the better for the larger schools, or those that haven't been that popular. You can put in a FOI request to the council if a school can't tell you how their nursery and reception places were allocated last year. -
For 2010 Southwark are changing to as the crow flies. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/Uploads/FILE_43290.pdf Over-subscription Criteria (for all years except nursery): In the event of there being more applications than places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority: (i) Children in public care (Looked After Children); (ii) Children who will have brothers or sisters attending the school at their time of entry; (iii) Where professional evidence indicates that there are particular psychological, medical or social needs which the LA and Headteacher agree can best be addressed at the school; (iv) Children for whom it is their nearest Southwark community school measured by straight line route from home to main school gate (v) Children living nearest the school measured by straight line route from home to main school gate Notes (a) A child in public care (looked after child) means a person under the age of 18 years who is provided by social services with accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers (Section 20 of the Children Act 1989) or who is the subject of a care order under Part IV of the Act. Children who are looked after under an agreed series of short-term placements (such as respite) are excluded. (b) Brothers and sisters include half brothers and sisters and step brothers and sisters who share the same home. It also includes adopted and foster brothers and sisters who share the same home. © The straight line walking distance is measured from the main entrance of the child?s home to the main entrance of the school. The system used to measure distance takes account of high-rise accommodation and measures from the main entrance. When dealing with multiple applications from a block of flats to the same community school, we will measure from the school's main entrance to the ground floor entrance of the flat. Lower door numbers will take priority.

Fuschia replied to prdarling's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Put your closest school down, yes. You will have priority for that school over and above other families for who it is not their nearest school. It seems this year places went to families for whom a school was their closest Southwark school, and rarely to families just on distance. -

Re the other nuseries, Puddleduck, Buds certainly do take children for sessions of 2.5h per day, or combine that into 5h. (Though they do have waiting lists - apply at least a year in advance) The nuseries that do 8-6 can use the nusery voucher too, as a contribution, I think, but I am a bit vague about that, best thing to do would eb to call one and ask.

Confusion ? Day Nursery/ Nursery School / Preschool
Fuschia replied to carlito's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you're applying to St Johns, then there is not much point trying to get into a nursery at another school, so contact nurseries to put her name down for her 15h at all nurseries your minder could take her to for half day sessions, for you? Do you use vouchers, for your minder, btw? can save ?100 pcm using those. -

The police attend sometimes but mostly parents don't do it when they're there.. though one or two do and then argue with the police! An inspector did ticket a parent once. the parking attendants won't do anything about cars with aprents in, it's true. I think it needs a blitz, maybe by plain clothes police, to ticket all cars on the zig zags, for a week or two, that would soon stop the problem!!

Giving birth - hospital recommendations?
Fuschia replied to sandy_rose's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you give birth at home, you know you have the undivided attention of the midwives, and can guarantee access to a pool, if you have hired or bought one. You are more likely to know the midwives who attend you. You can still transfer quickly if there is a problem. Most problems develop slowly, rather than in the blink of an eye. Although you can't have an epidural, you can have gas and air and water and your pain may feel more manageable when you feel safe. I presume if you start at home then need to transfer then they will come with you?
