bus shelter (why not on Barry Road)
Penguin68 replied to brontoscorpio's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Bus shelter?? You were lucky! When I was t?lad council paid people to spray folks waiting for buses with high-powered fire hoses ? and there were no bl**dy buses anyway?! -
The Horniman's Museum ran a massive event a few years ago That was the 'jerk-off' if I recall - a celebration of all things Jamaican (and Trinidadian). It ran for a couple of years and was great to attend, but, you are correct, somewhat of a nightmare to live close to. I came back to find someone parked in my drive! But that was only a one-day afternoon/ evening event. I think it was the park rather than the Museum which was 'the host'.

Robin By all means let them know about how bad Conways is (I hardly imagine it will come as a surprise) and certainly the proper full resurfacing seems generally to be better delivered than the patch-up joke jobs - but it really hurts me to see the Council actually paying for such an appalling service. I would rather nothing was done at all than such a bodge. To send out the same chancers to repair their own work - no doubt for additional charges - when that repair will itself again not see the week out just seems a waste of your, and my, money.
-
Seriously tempted to. Not that any party would dare to run such a ticket. Nor that the apparat would allow them to deliver on it.
-
Many of the pot holes are now back, some worse than before (there was a 4x4x4 inch lump of tarmac 'bumped' out of a non-repair forming an additional hazard this morning). Probably no point in reporting any of this again - all we will see is more of our money wasted by Southwark via Conways. Once you put up a sufficiently cr*p performance you can get out of anything. Come May I'd vote for any party simply standing for a 'dump the Conway's contract' ticket - however vile their other policies were.

Dunstan's Rd is a lovely street, but... (ugly bins)
Penguin68 replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Southwark has a good refuse collection and recycling policy - separating recycling into (effectively) organic and inorganic (or wet and dry) with a separate non-recyclable collection seems a very positive approach. Bin collection using bins which can be lifted automatically into the lorries (and wheeled) is good for the bin-men (I'd say bin people but all mine seem to be men) and I can remember the clatter of aluminium and light steel bins when we had those - the downside to this is that we need three, large, bins for this policy to be effective (if we live in houses, not blocks of flats). [People without gardens can get by with the kitchen or kerbside caddy, but these are more fragile, lose their lids more easily and can be quite noisome] So kerbside clutter is the price we pay for the other benefits, where houses have small front areas and other possible uses for them, such as more safely storing two-wheeled vehicles. Clearly the aesthetic (and practical) problems of bins on the pavement are real, but they are an unintended consequence of what I believe is an overall good refuse policy (entirely outwith the stupid withdrawal of free collection of bulky items - which was short-sighted at the least!). -
Ghosts and Hauntings In East Dulwich?

But where are the pesky kids to reveal the trickery when you need them...? -
I'm only nitpicking Penguin but I know you value precision - the Community Charge was abolished in 1993! I initially wrote 'rates'...!

The repairs (and I use that word quite wrongly) are perfunctory at best - one is already breaking up, and despite having marked up some more holes, I assume for treatment, no more work (by 9:30 this morning) was being done. Frankly, if I had been paying someone to do this (hang on, I pay Council Tax, I am paying someone to do this) I would not be meeting their bill. But then it's Conways, so that won't be an option... Amended (see below) to specify a 21st Century tax system.

I've been told that contents policies have, as standard, cover for rehousing Really - that's not on my contents policy. Only for the house fabric (I insure separately). Try National Farmers Union - they can be flexible. If you have the same cover on 2 policies they don't pay out on one of them anyway. So they shouldn't penalise you.

Conway has just started work on this, starting at the South end of Underhill repairing the damaged cushions by Ryedale.

Apparently once signed off there is nothing local residents can do. As regards the required building work and change of use, that is true. However if people's worst fears are realised (I suspect they may not be) it is always possible to challenge the pub's licence. However, making an issue about it being a pub itself is, as others have mentioned, something else. There has always been a pub there (within the memory of anyone living who could have moved in close to it) - so that is something you would have accepted in moving close. People who move close to a business and then complain about it (assuming it continues to act as such a business would normally act) are the worst sorts of entrists IMHO. And were I a local politician (which thank goodness I'm not) I would be wary about attacking what could well be a legitimate and valuable-to-the-area business just to curry favour with nimby-ists. By all means campaign against it if it does prove a trouble spot, but don't preempt that. But then, I don't support the 'no cars, no local businesses' party.

Bad news - looks like the Gowlett is closing...
Penguin68 replied to Sporthuntor's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Maybe a new thread 'Bad News - whatever' but I think it would be very swiftly lounged. -
That's why they ran out of money.
-
Ran out of money I'd guess.
-
Renata, I didn't mean missing road markings but the spray paint put around pot holes etc to identify them for treatment. I don't think there are road marking issues as such.

Good news! The Gowlett has reopened!!
Penguin68 replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you Sue. -
As of 3:30 this afternoon the pot holes were untreated and, with none of the customary markings around them I would guess entirely uninspected. The clock I suppose is thus still ticking.

Would it be possible either to change the name of this thread or to start a new one celebrating its reopening! It's all slightly confusing now. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Penguin68 replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, re Underhill Road potholes. You might want to remind those I/C road repairs in Southwark that as the appalling state of the road has been recently reported to them, including by a local councillor with that stretch of road in his ward, and because the state is so bad that holes have reached hard core etc. - any accidents, including to people or to vehicles may become a fiscal liability for the Council - as this is clearly both (now) known to the council and is in such a state that it goes well beyond 'normal wear and tear' which could reasonably be anticipated by road users. To put off repair for two winter months (having initially scheduled them earlier) when weather conditions are bound both to exacerbate the deterioration, and to conceal the full state of the damage (i.e, by being water or even snow filled) so that users may commit to dangerous stretches of road unknowingly may move the council from being sued for damages to being sued for criminal damages, where they knowingly allow dangerous road conditions to continue. This at a time when it can be shown they repaved the south section of Langton Rise pavement when it was not in such a dangerous condition, and using paving stones rather than tarmac (much cheaper to lay, I believe) with which the pavements everywhere else locally are covered (Oh, and there's a big pothole in Langton Rise roadway itself untreated!) This seems a poor allocation of limited funds at a time, apparently, of budget restriction (not to mention the cost of painting yellow lines everywhere!) -
This is already a topic on Councillor Barber's thread. Numbers of people, including him, have now reported it. Whether there is money left in the pot for work this fiscal may be more moot.

Penguin68 replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James - I was just pointing out that you don't carry the can for the whole of Underhill, or possibly (I am assuming you will not be standing in Dulwich Hill, apologies if I'm wrong) for any of in in future. You often seem to get stuck with issues that fall outside your geographic area of responsibility (although I know you offer what help you can, or work with fellow councillors in other wards). -
Helicopter circling Goose Green area - why?

If it's red or yellow it's quite likely to be an air ambulance. Kings has a landing pad on its roof. -
2 x 8 Underhill Rd with different postcodes
Penguin68 replied to IlonaM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
How postal addresses happen at all can be discovered here: https://www.royalmail.com/sites/default/files/Royal-Mail-PAF-Code-of-Practice.pdf https://www.designingbuildings.co.uk/wiki/Applying_for_new_postal_addresses It may be worthwhile writing a separate note (not just on the parcel) to the person at 8 Pickett's Terrace - also letting them know your name, address and proper postcode in case they get your misdelivered mail, as you have theirs.
