  1. This thread has been partially updated in March 2021. More updates will be needed. It's a snapshot of how Lordship Lane was 27 years ago, and what has happened since. (There are still several long-standing shops on LL, such as Chener Books, SMBS, Dulwich Tandoori, Bell's Kitchens, Dulwich DIY, AJ Farmer)

  2. I should probably qualify my OP. If this song were a share, I would buy it now. But I'd be planning to sell it in about two months time. It has the catchy get-under-the-skin qualities to make it a one-hit wonder, but the lyrics too repetitive to make it a long term classic. And using the word 'crazy' twice suggests he has a limited English vocabulary.

A bit like Tom Watson at this year's Open, fairytale stories don't always come true. Still, perversely now that England are firm underdogs maybe they have a chance.

  4. Always do what the opposition least want you to do - which in this case means pick Ramprakash (the Oval atmosphere will be electric if they make this imaginative choice). Unfortunately Ashley Giles is one of the selectors and (a) Ramps slagged him off at the start of the season and (b) he's biased towards his Warwickshire boys, which means Bell and/or Trott is certain to play.
  5. Fantastic stuff. My strategy was to not listen to the coverage this morning to give England a chance to get some wickets, and it seems to have worked.

So now it's Australia versus Freddie's knee and Pietersen's Achilles. Game on.

  6. Well my ?10 on Australia at 7:1 is now depressingly looking like it was a good bet - they're up to 5:2. It's one bet I'd really love to lose. At least I'll have something to drown my sorrows if the 'unthinkable' happens. (Sadly, for me it was always only too thinkable).

  7. The forecast is that we could lose as little as one hour or as much as five hours of today to rain. That makes Strauss' decision incredibly tough. My inclination would be to go in for 20 minutes, about five overs, and thrash, in the hope of putting on a quick 40 runs. If Philip Hughes has a bit of luck, Australia could easily be at 250 by close of play, but England have to take a small risk to have a decent chance of victory. Tomorrow's forecast is fine all day.
  8. Strauss's fielding tactics this morning a complete mystery: Broad bowling short tosh and getting tonked, with no third man and a mid off. Inept. And no Flintoff.

However, given a lead of just 210, Strauss was absolutely right to enforce the follow-on. In these batsman friendly conditions, Australia could easily have been 60 for no wicket at lunch, and suddenly England would have begun to feel nervous. On top of that, with Broad looking extremely ordinary today, he needs time to regroup.

  9. ?10 on Australia to win at Lord's at 7:1. Bookies are already writing Australia off, but this is the team that scored 670 just last weekend....England enforce follow-on, Australia score 450 in second innings, England crumble chasing 200 with Clarke and North spinning them to victory on a fifth day pitch. Alas it's only too plausible an outcome, 7 to 1 seem like good odds.
  10. Something rather samey about Anderson, Broad and Onions. And whenever Broad comes on to bowl, the scoring rate seems to pick up. It's about time he came to the party, as they say - a couple of wickets to lame pull shots isn't enough for me. The really bold move for Edgbaston would be Anderson, Harmison, and the unfairly sidelined Sidebottom. With Anderson batting at 9.

...and London Bridge would then have fined you ?20 Plimsoul. At least, they fined me ?20 at the London Bridge booth the other day. I had jumped on the train because there was a 5 minute queue at the East Dulwich machine and the train was leaving in 2 minutes. I was told that unless tickets are not on sale at the original station, you have to pay the fine. Long queues are not an excuse, apparently.

  12. Blimey people, over 18,000 views of this thread. Is this a record for the EDF? Actually a quick check says there are some old time threads in the Lounge still ahead of it:

    19,700 "A joke"

    19,900 "Quiet room"

But still way out there in front...

29,000 "Seen anyone famous in East Dulwich?"

An interesting reflection of local priorities.

  13. To quote Wikipedia: "Early chiropractors believed that all disease was caused by interruptions in the flow of innate intelligence, a vital nervous energy or life force that represented God's presence in man; chiropractic leaders often invoked religious imagery and moral traditions." Doesn't sound like science to me. Quack Quack.
  14. Anna, I think the main concern people have expressed is the lack of play area. As others have pointed out above, there's almost no playground, and the fields of Peckham Rye opposite will be out of bounds. They promise 4 hours of PE and sport per week, which is the boys being bussed out to Herne Hill. But there will surely be days when boys don't go out into the fresh air once between 8.30am and 3.30pm. I hope I'm wrong.
  15. Want to know what the new boys academy (being built next to Friern Rd/Peckham Rye) will look like, inside and out? There's now a virtual tour complete with Sarah Beeny music here...

    http://www.harrisdulwichboys.org.uk/information.asp?l=2&p=6

The school opens in just three months time, though from the blurb it looks like Langbourne Primary school (near Kingsdale) is going to be the temporary base with boys being shipped across by minibus from the Harris girls school each day. Anyone out there have a son starting in September? Can you tell us more?

  16. An update on this case, Simon Singh has decided to appeal, which will raise the profile of the story considerably. The chiropractics are going to get lots of bad publicity out of this and might deeply regret resorting to litigation. I hope so. (Their alternative course of action was to publish some scientific evidence to back themselves up. If they have any of course).
  17. Fair point MM, wasn't meaning to pass the buck here, and have phoned Southwark this morning, who passed me on to the Dulwich community wardens (telephone 7525 0036). They are going to get back to me on this.

By the way, I'm not sure what I've done to deserve to be addressed as "Rev".

    Yours

    Reg.

  18. Yesterday evening a few children (in the age range 6 to 12) were happily playing on the pavements along Colwell Road. They had some pavement chalks and after producing a long, illustrated hopscotch grid they started a competition for who could produce the best pavement picture. Their artwork was really creative (flowers, mosaics etc).

A few minutes later one of them knocked on the door to report that two community officers had come along and told them to remove these pictures as they are "graffiti". The disconsolate kids borrowed buckets and brooms and scrubbed away all of their artwork.

It doesn't take much water to remove children's pavement chalk (indeed last night's rain would have been enough). But those children won't be engaging in that game again.

Dear community officers, if you happen to be reading this, then I hope you realise just how misguided your enforcement was in this pathetic little incident. Perhaps you thought you've just nipped in the bud some potential future criminals, but instead you've killed off some spontaneous creative street play, the like of which hasn't been seen on East Dulwich streets since the 1950s (or so some threads tell us).

Does anyone know what the law is regarding pavement chalk/hopscotch etc?

    UPDATE AT 2.30pm

Rang the Community Wardens about this, they checked up and rang back. The situation seems to be that the law is vague - pavement chalking might be regarded as graffiti because it is writing on public land, even though it's temporary. But it's almost inconceivable that a child would even be cautioned for such a thing unless what they chalked was offensive. The wardens concerned won't challenge these children again (if they do, I'll be on the case immediately).

Now, where can I buy some chalk...?
