So sorry to read this. THere are many horror stories around leasehold where one guy last year got his ?600k flat forfeited as he did not ask permission to chnage his bathroom and kitchen. This is the way landlords can gain and they will not let it go until you pay. Another lady was unable to sell her flat because the landlord did not give permission for works that were done 21 years ago and 4 owners before!!! They were pretty much harraased into selling the flat back to the landlord at a very low price. THey lost over ?100k. You might be able to take over the management by applying for a right to manage (RTM) if you qualify. Gives the leaseholders control of looking after the property. Or you could try collective enfranchisement, where you buy your freehold. There are 2 ways to do this. The first is an informal route - where you ask your freeholder for a cost. This maybe dangerous to do as the freeholder may charge more than should and add further covenants meaning you may still be liable to pay for extra charges. The second is the formal route - You will need a specialist lawyer such as 'Leasehold solutions' and instruct your own surveyor for valuation. pls could you help sign and share this petition. The law commissioner says leasehold is unfit for purpose. Commonhold is when you own your flat without a third party freeholder so less chance of costly disputes. Full control of your property and service charges.
