Southwark to repay 10,000 bus lane fines
SE22_2020er replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
What actually happened please? The BBC article seems to indicate that people did drive in bus lanes but the penalty notices were coded wrongly when they were issued? -
My interpretation of Hen123's point is that cyclists are humans as are car drivers, pedestrians etc.... ...."he who is without sin, let him cast the first stone." Everybody does things that they shouldn't - pedestrians drop litter and graffiti walls, car drivers speed, use their phones and kill a disproportionate number of people when they're driving, bus passengers verbally abuse bus drivers etc. etc. I've been cycling to work pretty much every day in London now for over 25 years (I'm also a driver and a pedestrian!) and apart from a huge increase in volume of cycling, which I'm sure everyone welcomes because it cuts down on car usage, I don't see proportionally any worse cycling than I used to see 20 years ago when delivery cyclists on fixed bikes were decried by the Daily Mail for going through red lights and nearly knocking old ladies over. My commute to West London takes me 75 mins each way and last week I counted bicycles I passed and their misdemeanours. Of the 238 I counted one day, there were none cycling on the pavement and 12 that went through red lights. As per @Penguin68's post above - those cyclists going through lights are acting as pedestrians and not car drivers. Anyway, the law is the law whether people like it or not - you don't get to pick and choose which laws you follow. Cyclists should stop at red lights and not cycle on the pavements. Car drivers shouldn't use their phones and speed. Pedestrians shouldn't drop litter and graffiti walls. Bus passengers shouldn't verbally abuse bus drivers. Until the law changes people should follow it.

Interesting stats on cycle red light jumpers
SE22_2020er replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
@HeadNun - the Met Police used to periodically fine people cycling through the Greenwich foot tunnel and hand out FPNs with alacrity. Similarly, there used to be monthly Police checks by the Old Vic and one would see quite a few FPNs being issued. Unfortunately, what with cost pressures and the all encompassing crime wave that's spreading through Dulwich village since the LTN went in, I guess there just aren't the resources any more. -

@HeadNun - do let Google be your friend 🙂 Fixed penalty notices A fixed penalty notice is notice of a fine. You will receive a fixed penalty notice if you commit crimes such as littering or fly-posting. You can be given a notice on the spot or by post. Who can give you a fixed penalty notice You can get a fixed penalty notice (FPN) from: Council officers both uniformed and non-uniformed Police officers and police community support officers Enforcement agents operating on behalf of the Council. -

Erm - you stop them in the road, take their ID details and give them a Fixed Penalty Notice as you would for any offence covered by FPNs, e.g. letting your dog foul , general littering etc. I don't think that there is a problem with the process. -

@Rockets - There is definitely some low hanging fruit here from a council revenue generation perspective! The law is the law irrespective of whether you agree with it or not. If you go through a red light then you open yourself up to be fined. Likewise with car drivers using their phones which is a more egregious issue -

@heartblock - thank you for your post. Yes - I'm sure that a cycle lane would necessitate the removal of parking to make it work, which is probably a step too far. -

@heartblock - I think it's everyone that drives along EDG that is messing up your road, but yes, there will be noticeably less traffic next week with the private schools on holiday. Do you know what happened to the proposal to put a cycle lane along EDG? -

@heartblock - completely agree. Utterly ridiculous that children are being driven to school. It's bad for people living on the roads, bad for the children and bad for everyone. The schools should do more. That said - the 'old days' were back-to-back tailbacks from JAGs and Alleyn's to the Melbourne Grove church. Thank goodness those days are gone. -

I had a fellow cyclist go into the back of me this week when I stopped at a red light as I was cycling along the Walworth Road. Poor lady got a bit of a shock and a scraped shin for her troubles. on the same trip along the Walworth road I nearly hit a pedestrian who stepped out into the road completely oblivious as they were glued to their phone and not paying the slightest of attention to the traffic a car also pulled out of a side road without looking properly and I nearly got hit for my troubles. And don’t get me started on the number of drivers using their phones as they drive 😡. Moral of the story - pedestrians, cyclists, drivers… …all as bad as each other! -
West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support

@Kathleen Olander I see exactly the opposite on East Dulwich grove to your observations. The traffic frequently tailed back to the church on the corner of Melbourne and EDG. This is something that never happens any more -

Bin lorry overturned, Townley Road
SE22_2020er replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Sue, for what it’s worth there were a number of employees in Veolia uniforms there when I went past at 8ish. -
I would welcome a segregated cycle lane along East Dulwich Grove from Lordship Lane to Half Moon Lane. I really worry about the safety of my children cycling along this road with the level of speeding and bad driving (3 drivers on their phones in the space of 200m this morning!!!) that takes place along this road. There is plenty of width along the road for a cycle lane albeit with the removal of some on street parking places. Failing this, just some speed cameras and signs telling people to turn off their engines when they are idling would be a step in the right direction.
-
Hmmmm…. ….must have been going less than 20mph. Jeepers, that’s quite something.
-
Or maybe the mains water leaks on EDG have subsided it. I walk past it a couple of times a day and there aren't any markings on it to make one think that something had collided with it.

@Sue - thank you very much, well said. I used to enjoy the East Dulwich Forum but now give it a wide berth most of the time because as you say it's just so tedious and the few, as ever, spoil it for the majority. I assume it's grown-ups behind the posts, but it's worse than my primary school aged children!

Save TigerSharks Swim Club at Alleyns
SE22_2020er replied to Abba's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This is such a pity as Krys and Tigersharks have clearly been a Dulwich institution for a long time which has given a lot of pleasure to many people both children and grown ups that I know. I do wonder why Allen's would be doing this as it's not looking like great publicity from them. My twopence worth is that I bet that all of the departments have been told to come up with ways to save or make money to counteract the cost of VAT. If it's a choice between this and telling a bursary kid that they can no longer go to the school then my guess is that they're going to prioritise the bursary kid. But that's just speculation and it would be interesting to hear Alleyn's side of the story. -
@alice - All modes of transport cost money - don't forget that the taxes you pay subsidise the buses and the tube 🙂

We use Lime bikes quite a bit for 3 main reasons: 1. Able to get into town as you can leave the bike at the end of the journey and not worry about having to lock up your own bike / find a car place / quicker than the train or bus. Also helps with getting over DKH as their electric motors make even that hill a cinch for unfit people like me! 2. Use them to get to Brixton to get on the tube network. 3. Quick way to get home from work at the end of the day On the downside, they're not cheap if you use them a lot.

Balfe Bikes appalling reviews on Trust Pilot

I'm sorry to hear that you've not had a good experience with Balfe's. I've only ever had fantastic service from them - so much so it seems odd to hear that you've not had a good experience. -
Yes - I'm still grumpy about being fined for parking over my own driveway once! :-)
