  1. Absolutely right. I lived opposite for 7 years and this is entirely consistent with incidents that occurred then. Didn't know how to safely approach the situation with her then, and struggling to know what to suggest now I'm afraid... 2. Discounted compost bins are available for about the cost of a year of bags. They aren't the most elegant but if you aren't too fussed, and have space, they might be part of a solution for you. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/food-and-garden-waste/compost-at-home
  3. Keep your eyes peeled for Moxon's in the background of a Calpol ad currently showing on the telly. No idea where the small child got the massive branch it's dragging around though...
  4. Southern end of Upland now fixed it seems. I hope water reaches those at higher elevations soon!
  5. We are not alone... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-43279633
  6. Snap, on Upland Road (southern end).
  7. Picked up takeaway pizzas earlier this evening (as I do most Fridays) and was rather surprised when I got home to find them much smaller than they were just a couple of weeks ago. Shame no-one behind the bar thought to mention they've been resized but then again they're probably too busy dealing with the fact the pub currently has no loos (bar the one at ground level), a distinct lack of staff (advert on door), no projector (wires dangling from ceiling and obtrusive TVs now present in the bar) and, most importantly, only 1 of 4 taps serving bitter. Can't help feeling there's trouble on the horizon. Anyone know anything? Even The Uplands didn't have this many problems...
  8. Looks like an issue on Lordship Lane http://www.thameswater.co.uk/thameswaterlive/index.htm
  9. Yep, certainly pretty low at the southern end.
  10. I have a massive (30m) but sadly dying pear tree in my back garden. This will need taking out in the next few years. Now, I appreciate that this thread is largely about introducing trees where they can be seen by the public but I contend that birds and animals need more than what is planted by our busy roads. And it is their natural interests which I contend should be the primary driver of a council backed tree-planting policy, rather than our own aesthetic interest (although I think we are quite entitled to want the area to look nice too!). So Mr Barber - notwithstanding the fact that it can't be seen from the road, I wonder, would the council be willing as part of this scheme to help remove and replace my pear tree in the interests of maintaining the neighbourhood ecology? This is not to suggest I want all my gardening done for free - I'm just interested to know where the boundaries are when it comes to providing mature arborial habitat in our area. I have much more than 1m by 1m than I can handle and would very gladly have something of similar size again (although of course I might have to wait another 50 years)!!
  11. Can anyone confirm if the picture that accompanies the "Price cuts top Sainsbury's list" article is ED Sainsbury?s (it sure looks like DHFC on the left)? Sadly suspect that this is no indication that we stand to be in the vanguard of Sainsbury's' efforts to cut costs!
  12. No police involvement as far as I'm aware. The trouble sloped off up the hill eventually. Quite disgusting disregard for neighbours and the general public though. There was some truly prolific shouting, screaming and swearing. And yes, there was similar (but mercifully shorter lived) disturbance a few weeks ago. I'm not sure where it came from precisely but it was in the 300s.
  13. Thanks all - sorry for delay, been overseas. In the days I've been away, the house has shifted (that said, although one door is now sticky, a number of cracks in the wall have closed so it's not all bad!) but all the same I reckon I can't really delay any longer. Any recommendations for drainage/structural engineers, or otherwise for tanking specialists, would be very gratefully received!!
  14. Afternoon all For some weeks now, I've had a small flood in my cellar (I live about 100 yards from the top of Upland Road) from water rising up through a soak-away drain that the previous owners had cut into the floor. After quite a long wait, I finally had Thames Water in on Friday. They deny its their fault as they found no leaks on the pipes running onto/away from the property, and Southwark Council say it's got nothing to do with them either despite there being high water levels in the gullies nearest the house. So before I get an independent surveyor in, I thought I'd see whether others in the area are having trouble. Any input very gratefully received!! (PS: the good news is that it's definitely not sewage)
  15. Hearing reports that the Cheeseblock has miraculously survived the ED riots.... http://twitter.com/#!/signal1650
  16. For anyone that cares, John Pienaar is bigging up Scoop on Radio 5 and has the owner on his show talking about the Lib Dems and small businesses...
  17. Yes, well done everybody! A great day out (for the bit I can remember). @peckhamgatecrasher, hmm, I tend to agree with you. I was one of the dressing-gown wearing flip-floppers - definitely not the ideal choice of footwear. Fortunately, the battle scars sustained by our feet came a distant second to those sustained to our livers...
  18. Has anyone else received an unsolicited phone call from Labour in the last two days, received an unsolicited letter from Labour in the last two days, and seen this thread keep being bumped back to the top of the list for the last two days? No? Just me then.
  19. If you live in either Ashbourne Grove or Chesterfield Grove (about half way along) and have recently been lucky enough to discover a size 9 Merrell hiking shoe in your garden, please could you let me know. Presumably, the foxes nicked it from off my patio where it was drying. Thanks.
  20. the bar staff are certainly nice and friendly, but there's very little in the way of atmosphere. Been twice now in the last month. Won't be rushing to go again.
