Victorian pine floor in need of some TLC

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good and budget friendly option for bringing our rather tatty pine wood floor back to glory? We want to remove the 2 x concrete hearths and blend in some new/reclaimed boards in the spaces. We also want to get rid of the carpet on our stairs so that we can have lovely wooden stairs. The boards are a bit gappy - the previous owners tried to fill them but they fall out and don't work very well.

I believe we have 2 options, 1. is just to sand the floor and put in reclaimed wood boards in place of concrete fire hearth which is currently there - so it is blended in and looks natural, and just live with the gaps or the other option is pulling up all the boards and re-laying them tighter together, and then using reclaimed boards where needed to fill holes.

The wood itself is in very good condition considering it's age - it just has lots of gaps where slithers were put in badly, and now get stuck in my hoover every time I clean!

Would anyone recommend company/person who could do this or if any are reading this it would be great to get you over to check out the space and quote!

Many thanks,

Jess

Hi. I used something called stopgap. It is a v shaped plastic tape. You push it into the gaps using an old credit card. It works very well to fill all except really huge gaps. I bought it online from stopgaps.com

I use a liquid floor polish which I buy from Farmers in Lordship Lane. It brings the boards up well but isn't slippery underfoot.

    • Greens have some mad polices and I am still trying to work out if it is true that the leader of the party thought he could hypnotize women to have larger breasts 🤷‍♂️ country is in a real state at the min and all party’s have a part to play in that. what the future holds who knows but it is worrying.
    • A stellar win for the Greens in Gorton and Denton, no doubt. But by-elections are funny beasts. Labour's strength traditionally has been in its ground game. Legions of canvassers over many years in many seats usually means that they are best placed to 'get out the vote' on election day. I can't quite believe that the Greens have enough data, or people, to wrest control of the council from Labour.
    • Was a regular haunt of mine for many years and had a lot of fun times in there and some marvellous food down the years. Though, admittedly I spent most of my time in there doing some serious boozing. In recent times I've been a less frequent visitor to this fine establishment. I seriously hope it doesn't change too much. It's always had a good vibe in there and that's down to Tim and Rod and all of the staff who have worked there over the past 26 years.
    • Tom came round today and did a very good job advising on picture and mirror placements, and hanging several pieces. Will definitely ask him back to do a few more once we have them framed.
