Unwanted paint to help refugees

Hi,

I am trying to source as much paint a possible for the refugee camp in Dunkirk. In March an officially recognized camp was created to house 2,500 refugees, consisting of mostly Iraqi Kurds. The Kurds have been taking the brunt of the battle with ISIS, they are literally on the front lines and there are thousands of families that have been displaced.

The shelters consist of wooden squat structures, as shown in the photo attached, reminiscent of internment camps. This camp in particular has many children, their life in the camp is their childhood at the moment. Paint is wanted so that the refugees can bring a bit of colour and life into their miserable surroundings.

Two weeks ago I visited Dunkirk and helped volunteers out a little. I wanted to find out what I could do as an individual to help from home. A challenge in itself. After speaking to many volunteers who had been there for considerable amounts of time, one thing mentioned repeatedly was paint. Life in the camps is rather grim, people are living a life in limbo and every refugee is fighting a daily battle with depression. It may not sound like it matters much in the scheme of things, but things like a bit of colour in the surroundings really do make a difference.

This a small thing we as the Dulwich community can offer. Any paint will be appreciated, we will find a use. Half used, old paint, it's all good. I will arrange to pick it up from your home at a convenient time. I will also post an update once that paint is delivered and put to use in 1-2 months time (depending on when we have stockpiled a good amount and when a volunteer with a van will be available).

Any other leads on sourcing more paint would also be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to drop me a an email, message or call if you have any questions or can help.

    • Yawn.. as I and others suspected the noticeboard is already looking shabby, has the details of local councillors who in my experience are of very limited help with anything at all (e.g. noticeboard took several years of writing to get back in working order and now isn't being kept up to date with any useful local info about food banks or any services as promised). So nothing at all in left hand side. Pointless and a real shame as could benefit so many small businesses.. and no I don't own a small business I just believe in supporting shopping locally where possible and know they often have little to no marketing budget.
