Entrepreneurs create employment, small to medium sized enterprises employ many, many people. Huge employers were started by entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs generate wealth, they invest, they pay the taxes that pay for the public sector, that pay for the NHS, that pay for disability and unemployment benefits.

There are many reasons why people become entrepreneurs, to say that they all do it to make a profit is a huge simplification. Many wish to control their own lives and have psycho-dynamic drivers others have no choice and are pushed into it by economic circumstances.

Then there is the third sector, the social entrepreneurs whose success is measured by a double bottom line i.e. financial health and a positive impact on society or the environment. These are not charities but are companies limited by guarantee that re-invest their surplus in some expression of their corporate social responsibility. As an example the Lexi Cinema in North London runs as a local cinema showing popular films, art films and supports community events, any financial surplus is re-invested in supporting its local community and in supporting an education project in South Africa.

So to paint all entrepreneurs as being grasping, profit mongers not worthy of our support is simply incorrect; however to try and describe entrepreneurs as any form of homogenous grouping is equally incorrect. Its complicated.

    • A slightly vulnerable but hopeful post… Hi everyone, I’m a guy in my mid-thirties who’s recently moved back to London and East Dulwich (I previously lived here for many years before, so I know the area well). But if I’m honest, I’ve found the return a little tough. Most of my close friends have moved out of London to start families — totally understandable — but it’s left me feeling a bit adrift and not quite sure how to make new connections again. Work has taken up a huge chunk of my life in recent years, and I’ve definitely let hobbies, interests and a proper social life fall by the wayside. I feel like I went from a fun social life in my 20’s to suddenly blinking and realising things had gone a bit er…quiet. So, I’m trying to redress the balance a bit — mainly so myself and my partner don’t murder each other 😂, and just to meet some new local faces. I was wondering: is anyone else in a similar boat? And would there be any interest in starting a relaxed, low-key local social group? Could be a casual pub meet, sports, park hangouts, live comedy nights — open to ideas!  I’m happy to do the organising/admin side of things — just wanted to put it out there and see if there’s any appetite. I’ll gauge interest and take it from there.  If you’d prefer not to reply publicly, feel free to drop me a DM.  Cheers all! 👋
    • It's Inner London. You could move somewhere else?

    • Same reason there are several pizza places and Indian restaurants?
