A group of youths/ thugs attacked the tesco (near peckham rye) security guard today. Security guard had done his job earlier and pulled said youths up for shop lifting. They threatened him but apparently the police wouldn't come until the actual attack took place. Even when called during the attack the police they took their time. Poor security guard. I hope he's okay. Hope they catch the little *****.

The yell "FIRE" instead of "HELP" (or "RAPE") theory is just something that a New York Times editor made up in 1964 and it has been spouted as fact without any evidence to suggest its true by many police departments and self help teachers ever since.

It's also not a relevant consideration here - shouting "fire" is meant to get attention and that may or not be the case, but here there would obviously have been staff and customers all over the place - it was not a problem getting attention, the problem was that the police (are said to have) taken a while to get there. Calling the Fire Brigade obviously would not have helped with that! I don't think you would be thanked for wasting the Fire Brigade's time! Just saying.

    • Yes, still odd. Their information seems mostly to have come from the social media post referred to above. And, as you say , reported "cautiously".
    • I have taken books to the Oxfam book shop in Herne Hill in the past and found they had a limit on how many bags they would accept from one person, so worth checking in advance if they have any current restrictions, don't want to lug a heavy bag out of the car and be told they won't accept. I was able to park nearby - in the side street on the other side of the road, but I do know it's luck of the draw how far down that street you have to go to get a space.
    • I would phone ahead to check whether they are accepting donations. I’ve been in the shop a couple of times over the past few years and seen people turned away with book donations. There are a few parking spaces outside the row of shops there and it’s sometimes pot luck but I’ve usually parked ok. Let us know how it goes Sue.   l
    • Hussein and his team have just finished painting our main reception room, kitchen and hallway throughout the house. We also threw a few extra curve balls in while we were away like painting the front door, garden walls and helping fit some new lights. Hussein is a pleasure to deal with: professional, diligent, trust worthy, flexible and a really nice bloke. This is the second time we have worked with him and will definitely do so again.
