Laying turf advice

Recommended Posts

I've just had some garden work done, including laying some turf on ground that previously had pebbles over the top of good soil. It seems they have laid the turf directly onto the lower layers of pebbles where they were mixed in with the earth. They've assured me this will still take if watered regularly. Do any gardeners know if this is right? Everything I've read online suggests you need 15cm of pure topsoil underneath newly laid turf. Thanks for the advice!!

It all depends on what percentage of your top layer is pebbles but at a guess, if it is more than 15% then you will have a problem.

You need an absolute minimum of 2 inches of good quality slightly compacted topsoil before the turf will put down proper roots.

Like all turf you will need to water it for the first 19 days or so ( but dont over do it) and then reduce the watering so that grass is motivated to put down roots.

Theres lots of info on the internet about laying turf.

    • I’d also recommend Paul for electrical work. He came round the other week to help us out with a handful of jobs (installing an SPD, new light fittings, installing a dimmer switch, a bathroom fan). His quote was cheaper than what I got from others, he turned up on time and he got the job done quickly.
    • We’d like to add our recommendation for Lukasz and team at L&L Building & Maintenance.  Lukasz has recently installed a roof terrace for us, and we’ve found him a pleasure to work with from start to finish. We contacted about a dozen recommended builders and found his quote very competitive. During the build his team delivered quality work, they were no hassle in the house at all and they kept the place tidy every day. The terrace looks great, and we’re very happy customers. What stood out in particular was Lukasz’s responsiveness, right from discussing quotes to follow-up during the build. Lukasz often checked in and was always available when we needed him.  We’ll definitely contact Lukasz again for future building work and we’d happily recommend him to others looking for a reliable builder.   Lukasz Kugaczewski L&L Building & Maintenance 07926651960 [email protected] www.landl-build.com
    • Yes, I did mention the train, which I now get from East Dulwich to Guys instead of the 40. Depends where in East Dulwich you are starting from which route is easiest! I think it is probably lack of staff rather than lack of hospitals which is the problem?
