wanted - gadget to convert dv tapes from camcorder to digital

We have over 50 old home movies on Hi8 and mini dv video cassettes - the 3 cameras we took the movies on no longer work.

Is there a gadget we can buy (or rent from someone who has one) which can easily convert them either to dvd or direct to a computer? We've tried calling lots of retailers but no luck... We'd prefer to do it ourselves so we can edit, and also because it would be so expensive to get them converted professionally....
