The house next door to us has a flat upstairs owend by Southwark Council. They had a problem with the roof which was fixed in a couple of days, the scaffolding has in my estimation been up for over a month. As we will all be paying for this via our council tax just wondering if this is a one off or if it happens a lot?

Imo I believe this happens a lot. I questioned the concil about this last year when the scaffolding was still in place 3 months after my roof repair had been completed, the council advised me they are charged the same amount no matter how long the scaffolding is in place.

Edited to say I don't think it's a scam.

Scaffolding Firms dont like removing the Scaffold back to their depot they wait until the next job comes up and move it direct to the next site. it does not mean that the hirer is still paying for its hire just an inconvenience to the residents of the flat. A call to the Council reuesting its removal as you are worried that theives could use it to climb up to your flat, explaining should you be robbed, then they after not acting on the information given them would it would be furnished so your Insurer.

I have also had scaffolding up on my property for about 3 months because a repair had to be carried out on the roof. It seems to me as though the contractors that Southwark Council use (Morisons I believe) take an extremely long time to get around to each job once a call has been logged with Southwark council's repairs hotline. I've lost count the number of times that I've had to call them up asking when the work will be carried out. Every time you call you get a different reference number and nobody there seems to be able to give you a straight answer about when the works will be done. They keep advising that somebody from Morisons will call you back with an answer but nobody ever does. Three months after I raised the initial call to report the damage to the roof, the repair has now finally been carried out. But I still find myself having to call up the council every week or so to find out when the the scaffolding will be taken down. It just seems absolutely ludicrous that I've had to wait for so long to get a simple repaid done. It must be costing us tax payers a fortune if this is happening borough wide.

I still wait for an answer from the council as to when this scaffolding will be taken down. I have often thought myself that it could be some sort of scam.

I sincerely hope similar is available still because for many elderly their pet is their main source of comfort and company.
    • In a couple of places locally, I have come across this. I am fairly sure that they attempt to do the bill in their head. If you just say , “no, I think it’s x” they start again and get to an agreeable number, or find a calculator. I don’t think it’s a malicious attempt to swindle people. Just not great arithmetic.
    • There are excellent charities like the Greenwich Wildlife Network who will help if you report any concerns with local wildlife. Foxes are wonderful creatures who had been forced into our town and cities and are just doing their best to survive, we should take care of them when we can.
    • Like I thought… prob like that for most of the day.. especially after people had walked their dogs, with friends, relatives  kids…
