Urgent temporary accommodation

Hiya,

I met a family with a 1 year old boy about to sleep on the street in Peckham last night. I managed to help them get a room for the night through Wandsworth Council but every council is saying it's not their responsibility to help them.

They are currently at the Southwark housing place in Peckham but I'm worried if they won't help them they'll try and sleep on the streets again and it was not a good situation last night.

Does anyone know of any cheap temporary accommodation near us? Are there any hostels? Emergency rooms? Houses with multiple occupants who will let people stay for a week or so ( they have a little bit of money I think.)

Please text or message me 07791 765 456.

Many thanks

Is because they were living in Luton, got made redundant in Luton and kicked out of their house in Luton so Southwark are saying they have no connection with Southwark and are therefore not eligible. It is my understanding that Southwark are obliged to help them whilst they sort it out but they are saying no. Also, they do have some connection with Southwark who were paying their housing benefit in Colliers Wood. It's very complicated clearly but I do believe Sputhwark are responsible for finding emergency accommodation whilst they sort it out. Southwark however do not seem to see it like that.

All I know is that it's not safe for a 1 year old baby to sleep In the streets in Peckham judging by the characters who were already circling when I found them yesterday.

I agree that it is absolutely not safe, but there would be a reason that Luton council are not helping them?

It sounds more complicated. Were they in default to Luton Council rent, which is why Luton evicted them? That would make them homeless by their own actions and they would need to apply for emergency housing based on the fact they have a minor.

Have they spoken to a Southwark councillor?

They haven't spoken to a Southwark Councillor that I know if. Can you suggest anyone?

I think if they'd stayed in Luton they would have been given emergency shelter but I think they came to London because they thought the dad would have a better chance of finding work and had already had dealings with Southwark. It is true that they haven't done what's required but they didn't seem to understand the system.

They all have EU passports but the level of English is poor.

    • I'm London born and bred and have always considered myself streetwise having grown up in Notting hill (pre getrification) and I lived on the border of Harlesden (kensal green) in the 90's  when it was pretty sketchy round there .and I spent much of the 80's and early 90's in downtown New York.. I would walk everywhere at all hours of the day and night and never felt particularly uneasy largely because I was always mindful of my surroundings and walked with 'purpose'. I don't know wether its because I'm now so much older but I don't feel as comfortable as I used to walking round London. Today I was in the West end and I made sure to carry my bag on the opposite arm to that facing the kerb and felt uneasy when I saw people wizzing around on limebikes or scooters close to the kerb..I never got my phone out at all...I never used to feel like this but just recently I've had friends witness phone and bag snatching in central london in broad daylight..apparently it happened so fast in both instances there was nothing anyone could do to help..One phone snatching was during the tube strike 7.30am two guys on bikes grabbed a mans phone..My friend took the victim to a nearby hotel to sit down and recover the hotel said due to the tube strike they had witnessed many duo's of youth out very early on bikes aware that there were more pedestrians around at that time with their phones out trying for Ubers or looking at directions. I would'nt say I feel 'unsafe' I just feel more aware of being a possible target for crime than formerly. I don't know if this is due to being older or due to reading the press.
    • The fact everyone has had a CCTV camera in their pockets for the last 15+ years has done a huge amount to prevent and mitigate random drunken violence.  Thugs can't get away with what they used to anymore.
    • Do you mean that there are only very few trades people and that all of their thousands of happy customers post glowing reviews but most of them have only ever posted once to recommend said trade person on the trade person's own thread?   If so, I agree it's mysterious.
    • Oh now you're coming over all defensive. What happened to the nice Sue, because since the early part of the year your approach seems to have changed and you've become much more challenging. No you have not broken any rules and even if you had why would I involve Admin, that's a ludicrous thing to say.  Take care Sue.
