Hi, I just wanted to ask other people's experience of baby vomiting during weaning.

I started weaning my baby at 6 months and one day after a couple of weeks he was very sick after eating potato puree. The doc at the time said it was a bug etc etc. That was 2 weeks ago. Today I fed the baby potato and broccoli puree and a couple of hours later he was so sick so many times I took him to a&e as he had started vomiting bile. Again the doc said it is a bug.

It COULD be a bug, but it just seems to be a bit coincidental that he has been sick on the dot a couple of hours after eating solids (he is breastfed all other times).

Has anybody elso found weaning their baby difficult? I am now scared to offer him solids in case he is sick again! Has anybody had a similar experience?

This happens whenever I give Seb anything with fish in it, and also anything with wheat (suspected he'd be a bit funny with wheat for other reasons, but this is something else!)

Maybe he's got an intolerance to potatoe? I have an intolerence to egg, and it looks like Seb has one to fish/wheat- I guess weaning is when you find out about all these things!

Hi

My daughter is 11 months now and when I started weaning her she would vomit an hour or so later, banana, pancake, cheese.... It turns out that she has lots of allergies, including rare ones such as banana and corn. Is bub sick after other food stuff too or just the tatties? Also, does he have any skin problems, such as eczema? Just a thought. Let me know if you would like any more info on allergies...I'm becoming an expert.

I also have a similar question - Is it possible for allergy to cause sickness after 12 hours or so? On two occasions, our little one had a pot of petit filous in the evening and then threw up big time the next morning promptly followed by temperature, etc.

Was diagnosed with stomach bug and a viral infection but I'm thinking it seems odd that both times, he had petit filous the previous evening...

Hi Amy

With allergies, delayed reactions are very common. Many of my daughter's reactions are delayed and does make identifying the allergen very hard as the reaction my not show until days later, however I haven't heard of temperature as a reaction but as I am discovering; anything is possible.

The only way to find out for sure is to try it out on bub again.

Look for other signs too, symptoms can differ so much but eczema is very common.

Hi

My health visitor suggested starting weaning with something light rather than the starchy stuff. She recommended cutting up a yellowish coloured pear and boiling it in a little water. Then blend it with the water as this has all the vitamins in it. Try baby with this for a week to see that there are no reactions then try the next week with an apple such as golden delicous. If there is no reaction to this you can then mix the two fruits to jazz it up a bit. Go onto veg after this.

My daughter threw up and had terrible tummy cramps sometimes when I was weaning her and it took a while to work out it was the butter I was putting on the veg. I then tried her on milk in baby rice and the same thing happened. Eventually diagnosed with Cows Milk Protein allergy (small intestine issue). Now 2.5yrs and fully recovered (and loves cheese). One thing I'd urge you is to get the professionals to diagnose. Too many people self diagnose or make assumptions and it's really important not to remove things from a baby's diet unless you know for sure what the problem is. FYI, my GP took some persuading but once referred to Kings, they were absolutely brilliant. Good luck.

p.s. even without the butter, my daughter hated potato until she was well over a year old. Perhaps a texture thing, but I just found other carby stuff she liked.

When we say....

..."allergies" we really mean "intolerance" don't we?

The defining thing here is that most of this is a case of sensitivity to certain food stuff. I am genuinely allergic to Brazil nuts, in short they'll kill me ( I have been resuscitated three times, not a pleasant thing ) whereas I'm intolerant to cows milk but not goats or soya, both my boys are the same.

Luckily these intolerance levels dissipate and may even disappear over time, as the mash potato one will probably do. To be certain on this one try doing a couple of baked potato in the oven, then scoop the insides out when done as this slightly changes the starch structure ( it can be a sugar/starch/gluten intolerance ) of the potato

Or try a butternut squash & sweet potato mix, don't add butter though a little olive oil is ok as it has the same calorific value but not the saturated fat that can upset the stomach

One last tip, when cooking pasta like spaghetti buy a pack of brown as well as the regular white, then mix this 50/50 in the same pan. The rougher brown is slower and easier on the gut & the white lightens it up, causing less intolerance

The same goes for brown/white rice but cook them off separately, then mix together after

I think the range of foods mentioned can cause both allergy and intolerance. For eg, cows milk protein allergy is fairly common in babies (but they grow out of it) while lactose intolerance is rare (but many people lose the ability to digest lactose as they get older)

I had the same issue with my DD when she started weaning and she was also EBF.

You can help your baby by giving her some baby stomach ease tea, or you drink it yourself and pass the effect on through your milk. She will simply digest better. Its a herbal tea especially for babies. It really was our life saver. I think healthmatters health store stocks it. good luck!

Thanks for all your replies, a week on and so far no more vomiting as I have given the potato a wide berth. He is loving sweet potato, pear, banana, baby rice, and even managed some peas, so going to stick with these for a while. The GP has acknowledged that viruses show up at random times of the day not specifically at 2:15pm, so looks like an intolerance type reaction which hopefully he will grow out of (can you imagine a lifetime without chips!!??).

For those who asked, yes he does have eczema!

    • But at the same time those she sought for advice told her, very clearly, she needed to seek specialist advice which she did not do and carried on regardless. So I think the jury is out on whether this was a legitimate mistake or not.
    • Thanks @Sephiroth I was thinking along the same lines (demonisation of Rayner by the media) and came across this article yesterday from Manchester Evening News.  It doesn't excuse her, but the title "Angela Rayner's real offence was being a working class woman in power" is self explanatory. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/angela-rayners-real-offence-being-32422596 The crossing legs nonsense is particularly telling.
    • Given her role, she pretty much had to go. I don't think she is an avid tax-schemer who deliberately set out to avoid tax - I do pretty much believe her story of multiple high-profile roles and looking after a child with needs. But many regular voters juggle demanding jobs and families and are afforded no leeway by taxman, so she totally should have known better But here we are - she was found to be negligent and now she has suffered teh consequence. To me that its the OPPOSITE of all parties/politicians as generally the ignore the whole thing (today we have Tice saying Farage's tax affairs are of no interest to voters for example) And it would be poor form to not acknowledge why she was targeted quite so viciously - we even have posters on here here saying "when I saw her taping on a boat that was the  end for me" - like the end of what?. Her gender and class were clear motivators for many people. Two wrongs don't make a right - but it';s interesting to see some posters on here give so many others a blank cheque. Many are planning to vote for Farage despite his dishonesty being 100x worse than Rayner PS - I don't think she will join Corbyn party - unlike him she is smart and unlike him she recognises that being In power means you can at least stand a chance of delivering results This. The Greens will have a rise in the polls on back of new leader but that is one hell of a coalition of NIMBY/YIMBYs As what would Reform do if in government to help with... well, anything?   Labour can at least point to decreasing waiting lists, lower immigration numbers, not having a different PM every 6 months - not that anyone is listening
    • So what do people want?  More housing.  More affordable housing.  But not in my back yard. That applies to urban areas too.  Easy to criticise, but where are your answers?
