Recessed spotlights in hallway

We are a ground floor flat in a Victorian Conversion and I'm thinking of getting spotlights in our hallway. I spoke to one handyman who thought we would have to have a false ceiling put in - has anyone had this done? I think it might be a bit of a hassle, or does anyone have shallow lights they could recommend? I found these which I thought might not be too deep, and hopefully we could get away with our current ceiling:

Any advice from people who've had this done would be appreciated!
