Did not enjoy my only Ganapati experiance which was with the Curry Club. simply could not cope with 6-8 people at the same time.

My starter which was 2 tiny Potato patties with a tiny relish dish was tasteless..

The whole meal was pretty dire and all the side dishes resembled the sort of stuff that you get with

any Supermarket 'Indian Party Selection' you know. 6 Onion Bhajis.. 6 Pakoras.. 6 Somosas.. ?2.99

I am a small eater and a normal rice I would normally share.. There was about 4-5 tablespoons of rice.

and a tiny bowl of curry. The whole meal with one small beer was ?35.00 a couple of years back..

Some people seem to think they are getting some special South Indian Cusine which only they understand as

being different to other local Asian restaurants. They are not.. They are being conned..

No better than any ready meal.. but a lot more expensive..

Based on my experience on Saturday night you might well want to give Ganapati another go.

Only problem we encountered was trying to choose from such an imaginative menu. Thought our food was exceptional, exquisitely spiced, and full of interesting flavours.

We ate early (6.30pm), but by the time we left the restaurant was full, including a few tables of 4-6. Service was sweet, quick and informed - we were told what had gone into each of the things we ate.

Price-wise, two starters, two thalis, a paratha, a glass of wine and a soft drink came to ?48 including service.

Couldn't say if it's "proper" South Indian or not (I've been to South India but did not become an expert on the cuisine), but the Indian family I was talking to the weekend before last said they would eat there every day if they could! They weren't quite so complimentary about another local "upmarket" Indian though.

I must admit that I had a meal there about 5-6 years ago which I really didn't enjoy, but we get a lot of Ganapati takeaways these days and they're always very good. The paratha is amazing and I could quite happily eat just that with a bit of sauce for dinner! We usually spend around ?30 on a takeaway for two, so yes it isn't cheap.. around 50% more than a regular curry, but portions are good. Although I admit I am not a huge fan of the "street snack" starter things either, if that is what fox is referring to.

But anyway, for a regular curry-house type curry, I like Dulwich Tandoori and Mirash. Not really a fan of Swadesh. Tend to avoid Jaflong after a bad experience.

Yes, they deliver Fox... but there's a modest saving to be made (10%?) if you collect yourself. The takeaway is on Maxted Rd, parking is for permit holders only during the day, but you'll be fine after 6:30pm. Would be very surprised if you couldn't find a space nearby.

The table layout in Ganapati is not conducive to single dining.. Whereas most Indian restaurants accomodate solitary diners without any problems..

Babur was special place back in the early 80's. Serving Mughal Cusine back then...

It certainly was different and more expensive... but I was earning good money back then and could afford it.

On the subject of Ganapati.. I have been meaning to try a Take Away at some time but noticed the main restaurant

is meant to be open for a lunch time reduced menu. Tues - Fri. 12.00 - 02.30pm. ?7.50 ish.

Despite walking passed there several times recently and again to today at 12.35 it was again in total darkness

with no one in sight an apparantly CLOSED. Perhaps if I had called and said we were a group of 12 they may of

made the effort. If you advertise as being open at that time you should be open.

Fortunately Cod Fellas down the road was open..

    • Exactly - a snap election will make things even worse. Jazzer - say you get a 'new' administration tomorrow, you're still left with the same treasury, the same civil servants, the same OBR, the same think-tanks and advisors (many labour advisors are cross-party, Gauke for eg). The options are the same, no matter who's in power. Labour hasn't even changed the Tories' fiscal rules - the parties are virtually economically aligned these days.  But Reeves made a mistake in trying too hard, too early to make some seismic changes in her first budget as a big 'we're here and we're going to fix this mess, Labour to the rescue' kind of thing . They shone such a big light on the black hole that their only option was to try to fix it overnight. It was a comms clusterfuck.  They'd perhaps have done better sticking to Sunak's quiet, cautious approach, but they knew the gullible public was expecting an 24-hour turnaround miracle.  The NIC hikes are a disaster, I think they'll be reversed soon and enough and they'll keep trying till they find something that sticks.
    • Totally agree with you.  🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    • It took the Tories 14 years to dig that 20bn blackhole. It's taken Labour 14 months to double it.  You cant get rid of Reeves though because the next person will actually be totally incompetent. There are no MPs in Labour capable of performing better than the current shower.
    • Thanks P. That sounds like a bargain compared to other horror stories I've heard!
