????
A man who can put up a shelf is more useful than a man who can explain Quine's thesis on the analytic-synthetic distinction. RosieH
But there's something very sexy about a man who can do both. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/12208-what-is-intelligence/page/2/#findComment-341145 Share on other sites

legalbeagle
What distinguishes a person is not what talents they have, but what use they put them to.IMHO. Mick Mac
I have a friend who said in 1st year at Secondary School, in the end of year exams, he came top of the year and the teacher in one particular subject had to double check who he was, she did not recognise his name as he had contributed nothing verbally to the class all year, but came top of the class. Socially he is a man of few words but he is a consultant doctor. So he is trusted with life and death decisions. I think verbal communication skills are very important in life and personal relationships and socially people make their own judgements as to your level of intelligence based on their interaction with you. I wish my verbal communication skills were better, but given the choice I'd choose logic as I think in the way intelligenece is measured for school and professional exams etc it a strong attribute to have. If you can verbally communicate that too its a bonus. ????? ????
I dunno Mick. To get on in on life you may need some qualifications but there are plenty of educated fools about...I've met some highly qualified people with pretty average minds. Besides, is 'logic' best for exams? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/12208-what-is-intelligence/page/2/#findComment-341153 Share on other sites
Mick Mac
Logic/analytical maybe best combo for exams. Verbal communication is obviously less valuable for exams but much more valuable in life. RosieH
I think sitting exams can be a skill in itself that doesn't require high levels of intelligence. An ability to write coherently and succinctly, an ability to remember key facts, to plagiarise study aids without being seen to...There was also a strong oral component to quite a few of my exams.Academically I did way better than my brother. But my brother's blessed with a brio and a confidence and an ability to sell coals to newcastle, and I think all of those things have stood him in greater stead than my English Speaking Board exams.
