Having seen two programmes on Brian Clough, the Damned United and the subsequent documentary, it brought back great memories of football in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

From taking Derby from bottom of the second division to the achievements with Forest and the debacle at Leeds in between, its a fantastic story.

Lots of players who were average to good were structured into great teams, imo. With the addition of a few high profile signings, Trevor Francis, signed before the European Final.

And Peter Shilton was a huge signing - Peter Taylor said "I thought we could win the league - but when we signed Peter Shilton, I knew we could win in Europe". Thats how important they considered the great goalkeeper to be to their ambitions.

They were great times for Nottingham Forest - two european cups. He could have done it with any team, some managers have that ability.

And he predicted it too - After being sacked by Leeds he was interviewed with Don Revie and when challenged, he said, I wanted to win the league better than you Don and I wanted to win the European Cup. He did and he did it in style.

Pity about his 'bungs' allegations and his slithering into alcoholism.

That man changed Derby into a village where everyone new each other, but he could not do the same with Notts, he never achieved the same 'taking the whole town with you' feeling.

Clough was never one of the 'in' crowd and he seemed too vociferous for the England selector's, but I always felt that he should have had the manager's job in place of Robson.

The bunch in charge of the selection had him in to explain exactly how he would do it, and which players would be used and where, but then gave the post to Robson no doubt with Clough's game plan.

"he never achieved the same 'taking the whole town with you' feeling"

You're damn straight he didn't, because the only team in the city of Nottingham is Notts County. Nottingham Forest are based in the Borough of Rushcliffe and are referred to by Notts fans (quite properly) as Rushcliffe Rovers.

Notts used to regularly hand Forest their backsides when they played them in the old second division in the 70s. And did pretty well against them in the early eighties when both in the top division.

I wonder who would play Jimmy Sirrel in the film. Now there was a manager.

    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
    • Just be careful to know exactly what they cover and the limits. i use Many Pets and Medivet, as I think one of the vets is exceptionally good. Some of the NHV are, but I’ve had a couple I’ve not liked at all.  I need consistency and to feel that they actually care more about the animals than the money.
