So it looks as though, perhaps, republicans are waking up to who Trump really is. The thing I don't get, is how on earth has this not happened before now. It seems that the connection between saying xenophobic and misogynistic things and actually being a xenophobe and a misogynist hadn't occurred to people. It's instructive when thinking about the character of many of our current UK politicians and their rhetoric IMO.

If only Britain/England had woken up to the nonsense that was thrown about pre-referendum

Maybe the whole 'The Donald' thing will shake up people, and get them to vote for themselves, rather than against 'the establishment'

I'm fairly sure that if we'd have had our vote after the American elections, we might be in a different place right now

They knew. The principled ones like Jeb Bush made their feelings clear from the start. The rest were constrained by the party.

I doubt people will wake up. His latest behaviour is now leading to people running around with "Bill Clinton is a rapist" shirts on. As long as class snobbery exists in either direction, we'll have people voting against "the elite" even if it is in spite of their future.

The bewildering thing about Trump for me is that the Republican Party allowed someone who has never held any kind of office to stand as a candidate in the first place. Maybe they figured they could trade on his celebrity status (they have been out of office for two terms after all), or never really exected him to win the nomination (like Jeremy Corbyn), but thought he would be good entertainment for the process. Either way, they have it seems, triggered the downfall of their party. Even if Trump wins, he will never get Senators and Congress to back him on anything imo - so a lame duck presidency at best.

The other disconnect with the public is the idea that any of these people really serve their interests. Trump wants lower taxes for people like him, and regulation of big business to be swept away. Nigel Farage too, is as close to establishment as a politician can get (and stands for similar ideas on tax and deregulation). These kinds of people do well because they know how to push the right buttons in people who feel angry or disenfranchised, but they offer nothing that will actually change the balance of pwer between wealth and ordinary people. They are frauds imo.

We haven't invoked article 50 yet teddboy. How low will the pound go when we do? We haven't seen tariffs in action on exports yet. How many jobs will be lost when we do? We still have our workers and employment rights. Which of those will be thrown out by this government? How many of those who voted leave will be happy to pay between 10% and 30% more for their goods? Telling people to move to another country is not an answer. I have as much right to stay in the country I was born in and fight for the country and economy I want as you. Almost half the population did not vote leave, so that's 16 million people you are telling to leave. And it is the narrow margin of the vote that gives me and many others some hope that common sense will prevail, and we won't end up over the cliff after all. A Norway type deal which protects our access to the single market is probably the best compromise.

They haven't got any negotiators.

We were going to borrow some from Australia but ....

Of course the Telegraph says the Aussies are coming (remember the EU have 600 experts)

?We are just starting to get in trade experts to work here. We have already brought in an expert, someone who has been involved in a whole series of free trade agreement negotiations,? Mr Downer said. ?We will reinforce that team with more trade experts should we get into a free trade negotiation.?

    • the same complaint was made about usa news stations 4 years ago.  its an old story. Its quite shocking how intelligent people are so easily manipulated. I
    • With slightly less respect Headnun I have  watched the 1 hour video - he said what he said and he did what he did. And his faux-wink wink “no violence people” fools no one but fools. Are you a fool?    the bbc told the truth - and it’s a straight up lie to say otherwise. Did they edit and cut to the chase to make a point? Absolutely  and correctly  he was not edited to say things he didn’t say  I cannot believe you watched the entire video and are trying to say the bbc edit somehow misrepresented what he said and Back in the real world - did the nutters who showed up at the white house materialise because of a bbc edit ffs - have some self respect and recognise what’s going on
    • Friends and family in the 'States always say how wonderful it is to be in Britain and see our news coverage.  It's all partisan out there. The BBC manages to simultaneously p off the left and the right so must be doing something right.
    • From the BBC: "The conclusion of that deliberation is that we accept that the way the speech was edited did give the impression of a direct call for violent action. The BBC would like to apologise for that error of judgement." What is wrong is editing someone to make him say something they didn't.  With respect Sephiroth, this is something I know a bit about and I have encountered, over the last decade, people in programming editing contributors to make them say things they didn't, the end point being to hang them out to dry. It's happening more and more and it's my job to make sure that people on TV are not mis-represented, but shown in their true light so that viewers can make up their own minds. You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and how hard some us fight to keep things impartial.  It's also worth mentioning that I have personally lost work because of Trump suing US networks, and that's one of the lesser reasons why I'd like to see him gone.  But broadcasters have a moral obligation to tell the truth and that's the hill that most decent professionals in the industry are willing to die on. Otherwise, how can the viewing public trust anything that's beamed into their living rooms?
