Approx cost of a bathroom fitting?

Just got quoted ?4,800 for the fitting and tiling, including tiling the floor (ie not including any of the fixtures, fittings or tiles). Does this sound reasonable? It's about 5 times more than I was expecting and I won't be able to afford to have it done now.

Does this sound like a reasonable rate?

if it's just fitting and laying, and you've already got all the fixtures/materials, for a modest sized bathroom I'd guess 4x days maximum labour. if you've got floors that need levelling, plastering or removal of existing then add some time (money). change out of a grand for a straight forward fit. based on the 4800 quote, I'll do (be responsible for) it for 4700 !

depends on complexity and how straight-up the tradesmen are Jim.

I just engaged a tradesman today. Quoted 360, got it for 200. when we broke the job down (and I supply materials) he was struggling to substantiate the quote. some of the tradesmen refuse to discuss how they came to the figure, so they can stroll on.

my home rules are never agree a price when they come to visit, think about it and call em back to question/discuss/agree.

you're basically printing yourself money by not being so grateful for any random number they conjour form thin air.

if it sounds expensive that's because (and this is the important part) it is.

that sounds expensive.. normally i would look at rates of around ?180-?200 a day.. general labourer.. then more for skilled , plumber, electrician - can go up to ?250-350 a day..

my bathroom took about 10-12 days.. so that was in the end around ?3k in labour..

Do you need a labourer

Or a fitter ?

People who do proper job are well priced

People who deliver cheap labour are not gonna invest time to deliver high standard for a ?100 odd pounds of hard labour

Don't you think ?

Even cleaners get ?11-?12.5 an hour so

?12.5 times 10 hours already gives you ?125

And that's only cleaning !

Self employed people have to pay tax and charge a bit more as government doesn't pay for holiday .

Corporation tax applies for limited companies as well

It all comes at a higher cost of work I'm afraid

Let someone work per hour then give them a payslip that will take their tax an ni . And pay for a days holiday or so and you'll see that the cost of days work will come to ?250 anyway .

Or another idea

Let's have it done pro bono

It's hard to say because the OP's scope of works is too sketchy, but a ?1k budget is definitely not enough.

How big is the room, what's on the existing floor and walls, are fittings being changed like for like or moved, how much new tiling (just splashbacks, half-tiled, fully tiled etc), what type of tiles (e.g. mosaic is more expensive), what about heating/venting/lighting the room, all existing or new?. The more info given the more realistic advice on costs will be...

We had a small (circa 7ft x 6ft sq) bathroom redone recently. New bath, toilet sink, new floor laid with tiles and completely re tiled the walls etc. Ceiling raised a bit, new spotlights. When they started a lot of unseen issues came to light and they had to strip back to bare brick and redo. Think all in it was ?11K. They originally thought 2 weeks and in the end it took a month, so even for small bathrooms, things can mount up.

Did a good job all the same, and we had them back to tile the kitchen.

Hi reddevil, answers below - what do you reckon?

The room is approx 3x3m

Existing walls are fully tiled

Fittings are being changed like for like

Looking at doing half tiled

Tile size not decided but nothing very small

Want to change the radiator like for like

No plans on lighting or ventilation

Makes me feel mine was in the correct price bracket RD as they did a lot of extra work in the month they were with us.

    • My understanding is the "free event" is 100% Gala, nothing to do with the council. Obviously Gala will still make money from the food & drink that they are trying to coerce punters into buying on their social media posts. Their costs will be negligible due to already having the infrastructure in place for Gala. So Gala are trying to appear community minded by providing this "free event", but the real goal is to set a precedent for a fourth day's festival - which surely no one could possibly object to?!? - in preparation for applying (again) for two three-day festivals spread over two weekends. It's only another two days, right, and the site & equipment is already there, so why would anyone object?!? More money for the council, much more money for Gala, win-win right? But yet another week of our park taken away from us, too, and another 18,000 people trampling & littering the park, and another week of disturbance for the native birds & wildlife...

    • Doubt you would have got much change out of £150.00 for battery and certainly having forked out for it, best to use your car. I recently sold  my car via webuyanycar.com - very pleasant experience & was roughly what I was expecting. Pop your bangers reg jnto their website to get an idea of price - they do send e mails once a fortnight/month just as an aid for you. Easy enough to delete - don’t even have to read valuation. They literally buy any car - if you can’t get it to them, they will charge you to get it there or recommend a co that will do it for you. Must say, mine was a 2014 reg and whilst a bit suspicious, paid extra to get money into my account as needed it for next car but was assured funds had I not gone down route I took would be in my account within 5 days. I now live in the country - every time I have been back to Dulwich and surrounding area, normally get a fine for driving at wrong time or parking at  wrong time so if I drive now, park in West or East Dulwich and do everything else by public transport and walking.  Were I still to be living in ED then before I left was pondering this very issue but since I have been back regularly for health reason I no longer drive but take the train and then buses, walk or Uber. Much cheaper than running a car and had I stayed, that would have been the course I would have taken. I don’t go out everyday, have an allotment or job to go to or family so in my case, would be cheaper not to have a car.  Was truely shocked   at the cost of second hand cars…..but where I now live only has a smattering of buses so no choice but to have wheels to get from A to B etc.
    • If you don't use the car often then suggest disconnect the battery between use by undoing the earth (negative / minus sign) cable from the battery and the battery will then last longer between use. Remember, central locking, alarm, clock, etc won't work with battery disconnected and wit ours I have to lock the doors with central locking before disconnecting battery as only have key on one door (leave bonnet open before locking doors). Hope this helps
