where to buy a hamster locally?

Hi can anyone recommend where to buy a hamster? Reading online it recommends not buying from a chain store but from a breeder instead but I haven't managed to find a breeder locally and with not having a car think I'm going to have to go to pets at home but would rather not. Can anyone recommend anywhere? thanks

We ended up buying from Pets at Home (after some trepidation). But they they actually really helpful and our pair of dwarf hamsters are rather lovely.
