Squirrels are an invasive species, displacing the native red squirrel and damaging woodland. Happy to see them decimated and culled.
Nothing directly to do with garden birds but habitat destruction doesn't help their woodland cousins.

When she was our MP before the boundaries changed, she was always really helpful and quick to reply to emails, so I'm very surprised to hear this.
Have you tried other sources of help eg Citizens Advice Bureau or whatever union you were in when you were working (assuming you were in one)?
