Hi,

I am trying to help a man I met today who is living on the streets. His circumstances changed dramatically when he lost his wife and two boys in a car crash August 2016. Unfortunately he was unable to pay his rent and was thrown out of his housing association flat 4 weeks after the crash. He is desperate and I would like to know of any charities locally that may be able to help him with bereavement counselling and or somewhere to stay.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks in advance,

C

A google search for homelessness and bereavement counselling came up with CARIS Islington which offers both bereavement counselling and a cold weather shelter for the homeless in Islington:

Not local as such, but they may have knowledge of similar charities locally.

More locally, Bench Outreach (http://www.benchoutreach.com/about_us) is based in Lewisham and works with the homeless.

I used to volunteer at the foodbank in Peckham. They are closer to home and can direct him to bereavement counsellors. They are not open everyday but he won't need a referral if he's not getting a food parcel.

Hi kind people of East Dulwich,

An update on Daniel. He had found temporary accommodation through Saint Mungos. He said it made his day having someone take the time to speak with him, listen, share a joke. He said that spare change does help but human interaction can make his day. Let's keep an eye out for each other

Thanks for the advice and signposting

Yes ,I agree ,You're very kind Catherine .I'm afraid my first reaction was to be cynical and think the guy was spinning you a sob story .I suppose I just hoped he was ,The truth being sadder to accept .

Really good on you .

    • Found Leon through the forum and would just like to add to all the recommendations as was very happy with his work. Had a few minor electrical issues that he solved quickly and efficiently for me along with very good communication, turns up when he says he will and is polite, professional and friendly. Leon’s number is 07707 925039
    • In the country, where I have relocated to these things and dealing with council  for all matters are dealt with  in days… freely admit less population than london. Certainly faster in everything.  Not surprised at all about Thames Water - remember years ago calling them about a leak in road - then it took a week for them to come out, despite daily calls from me. Disgusting at that time the lack of concern and wastage of water. Unbelievable that they are not held to account fir anything and that goes for Southwark Council as well.
    • But without knowing the cause of the repeated leaks, it's impossible to comment really. Poor repairs? Something wrong further up the system? Lack of maintenance?  When one of the leaks in our road recurred shortly after it had been repaired, a TW guy said to me that the repairers must have jumped too hard on the asphalt (?) laid above the point of the repair when they were getting it to settle (?) and broken the repair. I wasn't sure if he was joking or not 🤣
    • But in many cases the leaks are happening in the same places again and again, and every inch of pipe outside the Horniman on the South Circular must have been replaced at least 3 times in the last 15 years! Of course the infrastructure in some areas is old, but locally there's been quite a bit of replacement. To little effect it would seem.
