Does anyone have acoustic glass in their windows?

We recently had our aluminium 1980s windows replaced with double glazing and acoustic layer. To be honest I can't notice any difference in noise reduction. Am I being unrealistic? For example; in the upstairs bedroom, I can hear cars on the main road which is about 60 doors away, or can hear the noise of vans reversing, or the chitchat from children on their way to primary school.

As a shift worker I was hoping for a bit more of a noticeable difference. Have I been had, or should I also get wooden shutters to block noise? Thanks!

I had acoustic glass put into my bedroom window to block out external noise which was keeping me awake.

I thought at first it had made a difference, but now I'm not sure. But I wonder if I haven't just got used to it. I'd need to have the single glazing back to decide, and I'm definitely not going to do that!

The room is definitely warmer than it used to be, though.

You could check what the acoustic rating of glazing units you had installed was (it will be a number and look something like 35dB Rw). I would expect that anything marketed as 'acoustic' should result in a noticeable reduction in noise compared to 1980's single glazing, even if not massive, so it seems that somethings not right.

Are you sure that the noise isn't coming into your home via another path, e.g. trickle vents, lightweight external walls?

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you.
