Calsug
Does anyone else have the problem with the bin men just picking out by hand the bagged kitchen waste and leaving anything else? Was wondering why my bin was starting to smell and it's because anything loose or that might have fallen out of a compost bag is simply left to rot in there! KrackersMaracas
We have it with our green bin- we routinely find half eaten food in there that passers by have chucked, and the bin men simply lift out the bags, leaving the stinky bits in the bottom. Strangely not a problem with recycling, which we don't bag. Calsug
With the recycling they empty them properly using the tipper on the truck. Penguin68
The collectors frequently use a front man who goes ahead pulling bins into the street and consolidating them where possible - to reduce the number of bins tipped and improve efficiency - some are strong enough to lift one bin and tip it into another, other's aren't. The Green and Brown bins normally contain bagged rubbish - so lifting bags out is possible - the Blue bins often don't have bagged rubbish - as the normal rubbish bags aren't themselves recyclable. So with loose rubbish you have to tip the whole bin. The same crews collect the green and blue bins on alternate weeks, so this isn't a matter of crew choice, but of convenience. Also, as has been noted elsewhere, the Blue bins are often pretty full of dry recyclable material, so consolidation is much less likely to be an option. nxjen
This has been happening since the large brown bins were introduced but I think it's unreasonable to expect them to be loaded onto the tipper when there are just one or two small food bags inside. I got rid of the large bin and replaced it with a small external bin and use the brown paper bags for garden waste. This solved the problem, means there's fewer wheelie bins out front and last but not least is more pleasant for the operatives as they don't have to dive to the bottom of a large bin to grab the small green bags. uncleglen
I thought that part of the the idea of wheeled bins was so that the binmen/ women did not have to lift or bend down excessively thereby avoiding back trouble and so seeing them bend down to remove the food waste seems to defeat the object.
