He came to my house today too. Said it would be 10 quid and then 5 per month. I only came on here to warn people, and now see that I'm not the first. I said I wouldn't give him any money until the work was done. He said his guys couldn't take cash, but would turn up at 4.30, then he would arrive to collect payment at 6.30. It is now 6.47 and I haven't seen either him or his imaginary friends... Feeling smug I rumbled him, but I could easily have trusted him and paid.

Verdict: con man.

I think the same guy was operating in Landcroft Rd this afternoon. He told me he cleaned my neighbours windows but needed to get round the back of the house and would be back on Friday to do so. He was asking a lot of questions about when they would be home which roused my suspicions, so I checked with my neighbours tonight and it transpires they don't have a window cleaner. Definitely some dodgy goings on, I am just cross with myself that I didn't pay better attention to his appearance as I was busy when he called and am not sure I could give a description. He was going under the name of Dean.

... and who wouldn't take a 'shine' to that, eh? He'd get my custom anyday.

  • 11 months later...

Just had this guy call offering to do all my windows and paintwork

for ?20, a too good to be true price and I said no. He tried to be persistant but NO!!!

He's white, late 40's/early 50's and today was wearing a blue sweatshirt with a Poppy pinned to

it. It's vague as he was backing down the path away from my barking dogs. Very very chatty and

is apparently working on a house a couple of door down the Grove.

Why are people being so rude? The op is asking a reasonable question. I suspect he is a con man owing to the card thing or maybe shy and didn't have a card.it doesn't matter. Pay after the event and, even if raining etc outside, don't let in while you go to get money.

    • He/she followed me and my friends quite a long way along the road so we worried they might be out of their catchment area. Quite dusty paws which also made me think perhaps they’d been roaming away from home for a few days. Took photos in case anyone is missing them! Very pretty, friendly long-haired black and white cat, leopard print collar, pink paw-print metal tag. They eventually stopped following us across the road from Mrs Robinson.
    • I took it to mean that he was going to present all sides of the argument (for want of a better term) rather than just giving his own opinion. I didn't take it to mean that he was calling "his own views" balanced.
    • I just did this survey. There are a number of problems with it. For example, in at least two questions you have an option "other, please specify" but there is no way to specify what the "other" is. Also, you have several questions where if you have nothing appropriate to answer, you get a statement "this is a required question", or words to that effect, so you have to put in something like "nothing" in order to move on. Can I suggest that this is likely to confuse people so they just give up half way through? Maybe you should test it out on a few people before going "live" with it?
