Hi - we are looking for a primary school teacher or teaching assistant (or someone with similar education) to help our Year:1 5.5year old daughter with her sounds and spellings. We've been told she needs more help with her 'phonic awareness'. If you know of any teacher that does extra help out of school hours, or someone similar, please do get in touch. Thank you.

I would be asking your school what they are doing to support your child to be honest - what are their plans? Are they planning to provide 'more help with phonics and spelling'? Surely any good school would offer more one to one with her (or small group work) and directing you how to support at home.

I think tutoring a 5 year old at home who goes to school full time may not be the best use of a small child's time

I apologise that I haven't answered your question, as I don't know any tutors, but I would be extremely concerned if your child's school is not addressing this issue and advising you to seek external help - your child is very very young and should be playing and having fun and downtime when out of school

i think this is somehting you can support at home your self- with a book to guide you if you need it- it is good fun

. go to a good book shop and look at the choices, w h smiths usually has a good selection if you cant find one locally.

keep it light and fun though- lots of reading together at bedtime and weekends. You could ask the school to stear you on teaching guides.

As womanofdulwich said, I think there are also loads of things you can do at home to help her with her "awareness". If your daughter likes to do things on the computer there are also a number of good websites that do loads of phonics games etc. that are fun but educational. My son who's in reception got a list from school and his teacher said that they actively use at least one of the websites at school. My son loves the alphablocks game on cbeebies for example (although this was not one of the "recommended" sites), http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/atoz/#/lb/alphablocks/alphablocksgames. If you're interested I can pm you the list he got from school.

    • Europe, very much so, the whole of August is a write-off, if you want anything delivered from there, forget it, but there's no similar summer shutdown period in the UK as such, just people taking hols while kids off school etc. The nearest the UK construction sector has to a proper shut down is the Christmas/New Year period when, depending on when the Bank Holidays fall, there's an approx 10-14 day unofficial shutdown between Christmas and New Year...
