Have historically used hardwire connection into Sky wirless router.

Just bought a Macbook Pro and have no idea how to access internet wireless.

Something to do with changing the channel on the router?

I know I have screwed up on use of jargon so please excuse me and help.

First off, what does the laptop show when you click on the Airport icon in the row of icons top right (the airport icon is the wedge-shaped icon of curved waves)

Is there a list of WiFi networks there - one of them being your own router's name?

Unless you've changed something on the router, wireless should already be enabled. You'll need the little pinkish card with the network password on too. They'll have your network/router name on it too.

When you pull up wireless networks, it should offer at least one network that looks like SKY012345 that matches the name on the card.

someone once told me that the default sky channel needs to be changed

Just had a bit of a google and couldn't find anything that says you need a certain wifi channel. Have you tried rebooting the router?
