I scanned a load of photos using a printer I had bought partly because it specifically did that.

However my son in law told me that the resolution was not high enough and it would be better to have them done by a specialist (which I never got round to).

If you are not bothered about that because you just want the memories, then that wouldn't matter, and I have no idea how much it would cost to have them done elsewhere (or even if my son in law was right) but it's something you might want to take into account.

And Fox is right, it's a very boring job and dust on the scans is not what you want ...

Thanks Foxy, that's a kind offer. I think I have around 500-1000 (original typo) as I was quite a prolific photographer at the time. I do have a scanner, but not the time or patience to remove dust and dirt.

There are some online options but I don't want to risk sending them by post, rather do it myself or pay someone in south London.

For negatives I could never find a cost effective option for sending them out. I bought a Epson v500 negative scanner and although it's really really time consuming it is very effective. It has IR scratch and dust removal that seems to work pretty well. I have a little air puffer to clean the negatives before I scan them and a light box to weed out the out of focus photos of hedges and flowers that my gran used to take to use up a roll!

I've done about 3000 35mm and medium format negatives (20+ years of family photos) and it was a year long project. I still have a thousand 110s/16mm to do which is a project for this year.

    • Corrected, a typo, easy to remember Bad Enoch, after the infamous politician
    • It's Kemi Badenoch, at least get her name right. Lurching even further to the right, maybe in your opinion. Kemi is quietly getting on with the job of being in opposition, putting policies together and sharing those.  British politics needs a radical change, however IMO, Reform is NOT the answer, only a distraction. Nigel is a flash in the pan having failed as UKIP he's come back as Reform who are so far right they are truly scary.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7545yz0171o#comments

    • With the Labour bashing that often happens in the Lounge I thought it good to get some balance. You don't need to bash Labour as they are doing it themselves.  I expect you could say that the LibDems are taking the centre left.  Despite Polanksi's landslide I don't see him as uniting the country. So the question is why under Badenoch, following on from Truss and Sunak, has the Tory party continued to lurch to the right?  The obvious answer is their membership, some see many of these as climate change deniers and xenophobic https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-68581917 Will going down the direction of Reform win them any votes?   What ever happened to one nation conservatism?? Genuinely interested.
