Hello folks

I may be laughed down as being a bit daft, but as a relative newbie to the area I would hate it for people to go without their christmas cards.

We've had one erroneously delivered to us which should have gone to Macon Court. Anyone have any idea where on earth that is?

Thanks!

Oh, we do love a mystery!

Address on the envelope is:

X Macon Court

X The Gardens

SE22 9GG

SE22 9QG is The Gardens (hence why it was delivered here, I'd imagine), but I'd definitely say the postcode is written as 9GG. There's no Macon Court near The Gardens as far as I can see/ know...and certainly not at this number.

During the development process, large parts of ED were punted out to builders in approximately 15m wide blocks.

In places like what is now Crawthew Grove this means that every 3 houses were built to a similar floor plan, but with slightly different trimmings. Hence you can look up and see designs on original door and window lintels that differ every three houses.

Not only this, but each block of three houses had a different street name.. "Rose Terrace", "Honeysuckle Rise"

Just after the turn of the 20th century it was getting really quite daft, so all these terraces were renamed as one - Crawthew Grove in that case.

The whole of the East and West sides of Oakhurst Grove were made out of two adjacent back gardens. The original manor house of the East side is the one on the corner of East Dulwich Road opposite what used to be a fish and chip shop. If they haven't pulled it down recently.

I suspect that the multiple names of the houses on the Gardens were down to the same thing.

    • Don't know why but it seems like there have been impromptu fireworks since early September. At one point I even wondered if there was a shooting range or something like that over Dulwich Hamlet way- the direction where the firework sounds seem to be coming from? Is there some kind of new, fireworks craze going on and where are people getting them, out of season?
    • Hello, I have your cat!!! I can't find a contact number but mine is 07845 277923.
    • Hi everyone, thanks so much for taking the time to come back on my thread - hearing all your responses has been very helpful.    I’ve tried some of the suggestions you shared about how to improve the connection but they don’t seem to make too much difference so I think we are probably in a dead spot unfortunately. I’ll keep trying though and hopefully it will get a bit better.    Coincidently, I found out yesterday that BT fibre broadband is coming to East Dulwich soon which should much improve the WiFi signal available in the area so I’m planning to switch to that as soon as it arrives. Fingers crossed! If you’re interested to hear how it is, feel free to message me and I can let you know.    Thanks again for all your help!
    • If you want to self cater and do it yourself, why not try one of the rooms in a church..  one I am thinking about has a huge room with kitchen and toilets… parking on site.. and another one worth considering is the church near Dulwich Library , top of Barry Road..  pm if you want more info and of course.. all the pubs on Lordship Lane. if you want further afield, Rosendale Pub has rooms above bar area that you can also hire…  Alleyns Head also good - section off a section of the pub for  your sole use and parking on site.. although, might not work if try want to dance and play there own music. Kingwood House might also be worth considering…
