Just to let anyone whose kids attended his Taekwondo classes in Dulwich Leisure Centre or Waverley know, that he's been selected to represent England in the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships in India in January.

We are all really proud of him.

Edited for typo and to change Commonwealth games to Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships - sorry for any confusion

Daniel will need to drum up some sponsorship, so if any local businesses would like an advert sewn onto his TKD suit let me know. It will be televised, not sure what channels though.

Just been told by Daniel that he needs to raise a total of ?1600 and any sponsors will be mentioned on the GLL and South Bank Uni website where he's studying and for whose team he competes as well as the advert on his suit.

Here is some more info on the costs: http://www.britishtaekwondo.org.uk/index.php?pagename=british-taekwondo-control-board-news&news_id=357

I think that was just the athletics. They do lots of other sports too.

Or maybe 'The Games' is different from the Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships. Sorry, I'm just a mum, not really up on all the other info. I know it's a step towards the Olympics and is a very serious competition.

Congratulations on him being chosen to represent his country but the Commonwealth games have all the sports going on at the same time and were on in September/October.

Taekwondo is one of the 'optional' sports that countries can choose to have alongside the core ones like athletics or swimming but I'd thought it had only just become one of those 'optional' ones so wasn't eligible for this year's Games.

After a quick google, there is a Commonwealth Taekwondo Championship happening in India in January so I'm guessing this is what he's competing in - it's not part of the Commonwealth Games proper but it's still an international level competition so best of luck to him.

The Southwark News are interested in doing a piece about Daniel in their paper and he is still looking for about ?1000 of sponsorship.

Are any local businesses interested in sponsoring him and maybe getting a mention in the Southwark News?

If you are using a shop which doesn't give an itemised receipt, or doesn't give a receipt at all, just be aware that it might be a good idea to check that you are not paying over the odds (and if using cash, that you are given the right change for what you handed over). When staff are busy they might make mistakes.
    • As I had a moan on here about the truly abysmal Christmas meal we had at The Cherry Tree last year, I am redressing the balance by saying we had a really excellent Christmas meal at Franklins last night. Every course was absolutely delicious and  really well cooked. The staff were lovely despite being exhausted and run off their feet. In particular, my sea bass was a large portion and cooked to perfection, in stark contrast to the small dried up portion The Cherry Tree provided, from which I was barely able to scrape a teaspoonful of flesh (that is not an exaggeration). And our Franklins meal cost less than half what we paid at The Cherry Tree (to be fair, that was on Christmas Day so the Cherry Tree costs would have been higher, but that doesn't excuse the appalling quality meal). Thank you again to Franklins for restoring our faith in eating out at Christmas!
