My son is in the process of making choices on the A levels he will take next year. He's very interested in art and design but at this stage not 100% sure what area of Art/Design he would want to study. He's keen to take A levels in art and Design Technology, but unsure what 2 other AS/A levels to choose. How do we find out what art colleges requirements are, other than a strong portfolio / sketchbook work? He's currently thinking about either Drama, English, History or Physics as his other options. Do most people still do a foundation course first? Any feedback very welcome, thanks!

if it helps (i did my alevels a wee while ago) I did art, photography, film studies & psychology...

I went on to study a very focused design degree (shoe design!) but started doing a fashion foundation beforehand. I did know I wanted to study some fashion based degree when I chose my A-Levels, but not what exactly.

To be honest I think it doesn't make thet much difference which A-Levels one chooses as long as you have art in there and yes I think foundation courses are not only what people do but actually very valuable time to be able to focus yourself on what exactly you want to study and where to do as there is so much choice out there.

Good luck to him

Hi

Most art and design degree courses will require a foundation course for entry. When I did my A levels I did Art, French and Theatre studies. For me, the foundation was a place to experience a wide range of art and design disciplines (far more than possible at A level) and it helped students to decide on which area to study at degree level. I had to show my portfolio at my interview for my foundation and the offer was only to achieve one A level (can't remember the grade needed).

Your son's art teachers should be able to advise him on foundation and degree courses and portfolio preparation. They will be art/ design graduates themselves.

Hope this helps and good luck to your son!

    • https://www.assistancedogs.org.uk/information-hub/assistance-dogs-emotional-support-dogs-and-therapy-dogs/   hello   i’d be interested to understand if anyone.has experience of Assistance Dogs especially for autistic children of different ages for emotional support and therapy   There was a prior thread on this topic on EDF 10 hrs ago but it had limited experiences and there was a (claimed) change in UK legislation in 2019. Whilst the industry appears unregulated/unlicensed, there are several providers (approx 15, perhaps more) who claim to have fully trained dogs or say that they can help families to train a puppy/young dog over the 18-24 months.  The latter obviously comes with a need for strong commitment to the challenge. Costs for a fully trained assistance dog are quoted at £13-15k albeit they claim £23k total cost to train the dog. On the one hand, this could potentially be a useful solution for some families if such a dog was truly trained as their websites claim and such a dog was accepted in public places and schools etc… On the other hand, I don’t think that I’ve ever seen an assistance dog of this type or in this context (only for a blind or partially sighted person) and hence a real risk of fraud or exploitation! The SEN challenge for families coupled with limited resources in schools or from local authorities or the NHS as well as the extremely challenging experience of many families with schools offering little or no support or making the situation worse leaves a big risk of lots of different types of fraud and or exploitation in this area.
    • Hi there  We live on Woodwarde Road backing on to Alleyns Top Field.  Our cat Gigi has gone missing — it’s been about 24 hours now. She is a cream Bengal. Could you please check sheds, garages, or anywhere she might have got stuck please? And if you could keep an eye out or share on any local groups/forums, we’d really appreciate it. Photo attached.   Thanks so much! My name is Jeff on 07956 910068.
    • Colin.    One for the old school.   Just saying.
