Home schooling and Tutoring

Hello fellow East Dulwich folk,

Thanks for taking the time to click on this post. I am keen to enquire about home schooling in the East Dulwich area. I am currently a primary school teacher (Year 6) in South West London, but live in East Dulwich. I am looking into the prospect of setting up a small private tutoring business in September.

I am passionate about helping children reach their full potential and believe a personalised education is key to achieving this. This has become increasingly difficult to achieve in schools and believe that as a private tutor, I could bring modern, personalised teaching/tutoring methods to inspire a love of learning in children and help them achieve and exceed their academic goals.

I was wondering if there was anyone on the forum who home schools their children and if they would be interested in employing a private tutor. I'm also keen to hear the experiences of those parents who are actually using private tutors. What do you look for in a private tutor and what made you choose the tutor you did for your child/children?

I would be offering tuition for primary age children (KS1, SATs, 11+) and up to GCSE level English. I would also offer tuition at an hourly rate with discounts for pairs/small groups of children (maximum of 3 children.)

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. Your feedback really is very much appreciated. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. :o)

I'm not sure if bumping up threads are allowed so I'll just do it once.

I've had some good feedback about tutoring from other forums, research in the local area. Still a bit unsure of home schooling though, and how common it is in East Dulwich and the surrounding area. Is your child home schooled? Do you know anybody who home schools their children? How do you/they go about it? Do you/they use a tutor? Would you/they want to use a tutor, if there was an experienced one in the local area? Any feedback truly appreciated.

Thank you. :)

interested to read your message as our son is at school from home but on the internet, at InterHigh - a great compromise between mainstream school and homeschooling. At the moment I'm doing a lot of the interface between him and school, chasing him on h'wk, helping him where I can, he has had a maths/science tutor (who may not be able to come much longer) but we've not got anyone else for now.

I'm very keen to speak to other parents/tutors to spread the word that there are great alternatives to mainstream school as it just doesn't suit everyone. Happy to have a chat if you'd like to - my number is 07963 046 456.

Thanks, Kristin

Hi Kristin,

Thank you for replying to my message. I think you are absolutely right when you say that mainstream school doesn't suit every child. As a teacher, I have experienced parents withdrawing their children from a mainstream setting (for various reasons, not all of which are negative) to then educate them at home in some way, whether this be online, by a private tutor, by themselves or a mixture of all three!

I will begin tutoring full time in the summer and would be keen to tutor children that are home schooled, as well as children in a mainstream setting. I do believe that one to one tuition is incredibly beneficial when it is truly personalised and not merely delivering a generic syllabus. Private tuition is about instilling a love of learning, developing confidence and curiosity, and empowering every child to fulfil their potential. Just realised I'm getting a bit too carried away on the forum and it's developing into something a bit preachy... whoops (!)... I'm just very eager to start tutoring full time! :o)

Thanks again Kristin for replying. I really appreciate your thoughts.
