nightmare - I think the bricks just can't take the constant water pressure. I keep telling myself we're lucky to be living here with relatively minor probs and not be underwater as elsewhere :)Hey ho ....

interesting posts ... wish they didn't need to be posted :( We have the same problem, 1st floor, whole wall showing signs of damp. It's south facing and this is the first year we've noticed it. The wall was repointed 2 years ago but 1 builder said it couldn't be the pointing as cement wasn't waterproofed 100yrs ago and doesn't need to be waterproofed now (??). Any comments on this? He thought it was more likely that the bricks had soaked through due to the constant heavy rain against that wall (not cavity). Having checked the attic with bare bricks it does look as though they're damp on the inside. Builder suggested taking the plaster off, waterproofing the wall and then replastering - help! It's the most finished room in the whole house, gggrrr.

if you can come to SE24 there's a car wash at the top of Herne Hill, between shops and Red Post Hill - we've always been happy, it's reasonable price but ask them not to hang the smelly thing in your car when they finish!

we've had an amazing builder/handyman but he's now moved back to Poland. I'm looking for someone with similar work ethics/skills who could do various jobs around the house and garden ... someone adaptable, hard working, full working day, happy to do small and bigger jobs. I'd like to find someone through a recommendation rather than being contacted directly by a company. Hope someone can help :)

Great to see that some of you are preparing for a hypnobirth, remember the techniques aren't only for birth but really useful elsewhere in life too, both for you and your partner. My autumn HypnoBirthing classes have started - they run over 2 Monday evenings (and some Wednesday evenings), cost ?159 per couple and include 3 mp3 downloads. Groups are limited to 3 (very occasionally 4)couples. I focus on the practical techniques, the classes are small and fun and, as a hypnotherapist, I'm able to ensure that you are using the hypnosis techniques correctly to benefit a maximum. There may also be a Saturday morning class (1 session) in Oct or Nov. If you would like to work in your home there is the option of hosting or even arranging your own group. We can of course also arrange a private course to suit your budget and availability. A shorter private course can be combined with an online course to reduce costs. we've recently done a great puppy training course with Jane Ball, Dulwich Dog School, which we really enjoyed. She runs them at the Scout Hut and also at the training huts next to Belair House. The classes are kept very small and focussed and Jane is very knowledgeable. Definitely well worth while and good for any age dogs.

Just been told by Talk Talk that we have to have a new service which means an aerial on the house and going into a new 18mth contract with them .... :( Need to find someone to fix our aerial and a new cable if we stay with them. I'd love to switch providers - do you have any advice, recommendations, tips on how best to get good broadband, tel line rental + anytime free landline calls and tv package (we don't need the full range of channels)? thanks - no label, we had them made up but could contact Designer Guild or Fabric Warehouse to ask, good idea. I can imagine the cleaning may cost more than the curtains did end of line fabric!

Our curtains are covered in tiny mud specks after a very wet and muddy mountain biker stepped through the door .... aargh! Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced but good cleaning company to clean them, preferably at home but I could also take them somewhere. Any advice/tips most welcome. It won't brush off as the specks were too wet and have soaked into the material and there's too much for me to wash out. Thanks, Kristin
